.270 cal long range

Marshall has just built a 6.8-08 and a 6.8-06 has existed for decades... its called a 270 Winchester. No reason you couldn't use the venerable 270 as the basis for these bullets, its just the twist you may need to worry about.

That's easily one of the stupidest things I've said this week ...Even though I knew what it was, it never even crossed my mind what a 270win "used to be". Anywho, it will be interesting to see how these bullets perform, in theory they should be amazing.....

Hmm.I drive my .30 Cal 175 mks at about 2760fps.Wonder what the 170 matrix could be pushed at out of an 08?might be a little faster?
But with a way better BC I bet it would shoot pretty damn well.

its about time!

now all we need is hornady to catch wind and whip up some a-max/gmx etc. etc., build a new 6.8 cartridge and get a few rifle players to build some 8 twists out there and the next fad will be born.....sure took long enough....i love .270, currently own wsm and spc versions

i agree with the pent up desires for this caliber! my bet is hornady gets to the table first with the next best modern design .270/6.8 cal cartridge

Bullcoon on this site has played with a 270-08 Ackley for a few years. He and I have discussed it from time to time. Perhaps he will chime in here with some experience.

Oddly enough it doesn't work that way. A 140 grain bullet in a 308 goes WAY faster than a 140 grain bullet in a 260 or even in a 7-08.

It's not that odd: there less surface to push on a .277 caliber bullet than on a .308 caliber bullet for the same pressure level. Force = pressure * surface. That being true, we can guess .277 caliber performance from actual 7mm (.284) data since they're almost the same (which means that 270-08 is pretty much pointless since The Great 7mm-08 already exists...).

I did buy a 270WSM because nobody sells 7WSM which would have been more flexible because of 1-9 twist and great array of non-hunting bullets. (270 is pretty much perfect when it comes to hunting bullets)

Pointless? Well, in the eye of the beholder perhaps, but the reality is these "side band" calibers such as the 25 and 27 calibers have huge potential to gain significant ground over their more conventional contemporaries. The fact that Berger, Lapua and Sierra are not on board is unfortunate, but I am all about supporting a Canadian who has taken a bullet, exceeded the ballistic coefficient of the most widely used F-Open long range bullet (the 7mm 180 berger VLD/Hybrid) meaning that a) we can show up to matches and shoot something just a bit different and (most importantly) b) we are not faced with unpredictable supply, price issues and importation issues that currently impact the supplies of the Berger 7mm bullets.

I am planning to write about this project and will exhaustively develop a load to go with it.
