Hey guys, I would like to hear your opinions on the Stag Arms Model 8 gas piston AR15. I would like to pick up a piston driven AR in .223/5.56 sometime in the near future. This will be my first AR and I would like to buy something that I won't need to replace. Time is also a bit of a consideration as I am contemplating joining the CF and would like to get some trigger time on a C7 beforehand. I am looking at around the 2000 and 2500 mark. Would you recommend this rifle or could I do better with another manufacturer. Please keep in mind availability. Thanks for your advice. :cheers:

Thanks for the replies, can either of you tell me a little more about why you would would suggest those options. I would consider DI but I don't know that I would buy one strictly on the basis of the internals being the same design as a C7 but the difference in cost is definitely a consideration; not to turn this into a DI vs. Piston debate. Do you know of any distributors for the Colt?
 
I don't know much about the Colts, but I can tell you that Stag makes a great quality rifle and you will get top notch service from Arms East.
 
Most of the CF is slowly switching to the C8, so the Colt 6920 is a better choice IMHO than a C7 clone which is a configuration the CF, in general, is slowly moving away from.

Also, if the intent is to get used to an issue weapon in the CF, don't get a piston AR.
 
If you decide to go with piston, I would recommend the PWS rifles. I have a Mk110 (10" barrel) and have had nothing but fun times. They are definitely in your price range, and are excellent quality.
 
+1 on both the Stag and Arms East. I have several AR-15 guns, both full length target rifles and the carbine versions (M4). My latest acquisition has been a Stag piston driven carbine. Excellent workmanship and fit and finish. Well worth the money so if you want a piston driven one, go for it. As for the take down similarities vs the DI version, for your new career in the CF, the practical differences are so minor it's not an issue at all. Essentially the main difference is that the Stag has a piston to remove for cleaning and the BCG has no gas key, that's it.
 
So far you have me leaning towards a Stag Arms DI C8 style AR. I was thinking of going either 14" or 16" in a 1:7 twist. I guess another option for me would be the DLASK arms. I am mechanically inclined and don't mind assembling it myself if it saves me a bit of money and I learn something. Has anybody used the DLASK? How does it compare to Stag Arms?
 
Get a DI first. See if you still want a piston later. I used to slam DI guns. Now I have a closet full of them.
 
I think the primary advantage to a piston driven system is that it redirects heat and fouling gasses away from the bolt and into the hand-guard ensuring cool and reliable operation during full auto. DI guns should be fine for semi auto and even full auto but require more cleaning and lubrication of the bolt carrier group. I am not an expert and I am sure someone else could give other reasons but I think that is the biggest.

They generally cost more and are of little benefit to the average shooter that bangs a couple 5 round mags through them at the range a few times a month. They are designed for full-auto/suppressor usage if what I reads on the interwebs is correct.

Spend the extra money on ammo or optics.
 
if you are intending to join CF get a DI. Trigger time will help a bit but you will learn a lot there. Most important ability you need to master is to clean the beast using CLP so there is no dirt left....start practicing. Guns you mentioned will do well no matter what you get. With the money you intend to spend you will get a quality gun. As far as piston no real benefit in the long run...i was going to get one too but you still have to clean it and it is actually more work.
