I am considering a purchase of a vintage shotgun. She is a 16 bore with a 2 9/16" chamber....
My questions for you guys are...Where in Canada can I get 2 1/2" 16 ga shells? (Epps doesn't have them), anybody handload these shells? Is shooting 2 3/4" through it a big deal? Should I just ream the forcing cones out?

Although it probably has had 2 3/4" shells put through it, I wouldn't continue to do so. It's always Okay until something happens. I don't know where you find the 2 1/2 " shells in Canada. I know Polywad in the US makes them, don't know who distributes them here. You could reload if you had a 16 gauge reloader. You just have to cut back the plastic on a 2 3/4" shell. Having a gunsmith lengthen the forcing cone may be an option. What kind of shotgun is it? Even if you reload, these old guns are only designed to withstand so much pressure.

I have an old damascus-barreled 24 ga. Modern 20 ga. shells fit it. What i do is cut new shells off at the crimp, dump out the powder, shot, and wad column. I then reload with 35 gr. 2f black powder, some fiber wads, 3/4 oz. of shot. Then I put an overshot wad and put a small crimp on using the back of a butter knife, just so it catches over the card wad, then I use a glue gun to put a very fine bead of glue around the shell. I've been doing this for years, with no problems.

Killed tons of grouse and wobbits with it.

I shoot four different 16's, and shoot them all with brass cases that are
2 1/2" .
You can buy the cases from Epps or from bilozir.net

Cat all of your guns combined are only worth 1000.00 so who cares what you shoot in them.
dang, never looked at it that way!
However, seems a moderator decided that my guns are worth more thsan that and that I was "not in my right mind" and deleted that thread to save me more embarrassment and lowball offers!!:p

Thanks for the info people. It is a Tobin black diamond. I have a 12 guage standard grade that I had the forcing cones taken out of and it works fine. I also had it opened to Skt1 and Skt2. Just not sure if this one might be worth preserving. I think the chokes are IC and Imp Mod so that is the choke combination I am looking for in a 16.

Would love to see some pic's.

If I get it I will post some. They might be "before and after" pics. She needs a little TLC in the wood dept. Barrels are ok but, a re-black would make them that much nicer. The receiver looks good. That black finish must have been pretty durable.
