14.5mm Ammunition?

MY FRIEND IS A PILOT WITH CANADIAN HELICOPTERS, presently flying in Afghanistan, mostly troops to the forward firebases, a couple of days ago they brought back a full load of 14.5 for destruction! Seems like a waste but he would rather see it blown up than have it racing by his machine. Last month one of their choppers was hit by AK fire, nothing serious..
Even though it is an old thread, some of us may still be looking for some. How likely is it that one could get an import permit for 14.5s? I emailed a company that is selling them, and they said that they would sell to canadian customers and ship to canada as long as I could get an import permit.

The Customs and Border Service people say 5000 rounds for personal use as long as it's not tracer, AP or similar military cartridges. Looking at Natural Resources Canada they have an import permit http://www.nrcan-rncan.gc.ca/mms-smm/expl-expl/pdf/fm13-eng.pdf but the ammunition has to be on the approved list http://www2.nrcan-rncan.gc.ca/mms/lae-lea/index.cfm. Can anybody else clarify or add more info?
From what I am told the 5000 rounds exemption only applies while phisically crosing the border with the U.S., and is subject to a limit based on the amout of powder contained in the cartridges. This is an issue as the company that i was talking to is located in europe. Another issue is that I have never seen 14.5 ammo that wasn't either explosive, incendiary, armour piercing, or some combination.

The US banned the export of everything 50 caliber AND larger several years ago, so no-one can get an export permit for either the 14.5 brass or projectiles.
We brokered a deal for 50 cal, 14.5 and 20mm a few years ago with a company in South Africa, but had to sell the purchase at a loss IN South Africa as we could not get an export permit approved there either.

Reinmetall Defence Canada http://www.rheinmetall-defence.com/ has offices in Canada and owns a plant in South Africa that produces 14.5mm. Now just convince them that is worth while to sell commercially. If the contract is big enough they can sell components only.
I wonder how many PTRD and PTRS there are in Canada?
I bet there are not more than 100 total.
If the ammo was $10 each, and every owner was prepared to drop a grand on ammo (100 rounds each), that would still only be 10,000 all total.

Do they ever find fired cases, and could that be brought back?

He'll be back for a month within a week, I'll ask, they just flew the stuff back for destruction, probably all HE, but the guys they transport could possibly pick up some Mt's for him.. I'll check.. I asked for a 100 round box,, he's making $40K/ month so not really into smuggling.. Whats a casing worth?? Recently fired, battle field proven, Taliban finger prints still visible??
