Finally got to shoot a few rounds today. Tried out a few brands that I had in my ammo box. Here are the results at 25 yrds.

First, the equipment:

Savage Mark II BTVLSS .22LR (trigger worked on)
Weaver T36 scope
Weaver tactical 1" rings
Caldwell Rock BR rest
Caldwell medium rear bag

Some results with 4 different ammo (all 10 shot groups):

Lapua Super Club- Very Good
CCI Pistol Match - Excellent
RWS Club 22 - Excellent
Eley Target pistol - Excellent

I was fairly impressed with them all but the CCI and RWS seemed to work best in my gun. All groups (10 shots) were in the 0.40" to 0.42" range and it was super windy. I'm going to try some more brands soon.

Aikido man, you hafta play with parallax settings on your scope. This is Savage, it just hafta put everything into one hole at 25, no xcuses. Either that or try it at 50 or 100 yards, you will be surprised to see same group sizes at 50 as yours at 25. Nice set up by the way.

Yes, I know guys.. I'm trying here! ;-) First day shooting this thing and if you look at the photos my rear bag was sitting on top of my ammo box cover to get extra height, which didn't make it totally solid. It was a quick fix to sight the thing in. I'll try again when I get some more quality ammo and report back. I did notice my parallax does go past 25 yrds... so I'm hoping to be shooting at 100yrds, yeehaw. :) Thanks for the input and the compliments on the gear. I'm happy and fortunate to have this set up.

This is one effin nice rifle... being a lefty too I really like it!

Are you in the Ottawa area by any chances?

Thanks Skyliz, I love this rig. Being a lefty, not too many things fit right if you know what I mean. But this thing fits like a glove. And, no, I'm in Southwestern Ontario.

Have the same gun in right hand, and a similar front rest. It looks like you still have the forestock sling pivots mounted. You need to get those out of there so the gun can slide back smoothly under recoil. Same at the other end. Adjust your forestock stop so the front of the stock comes hard against it for each shot. They all need to be from the same position. A used dryer sheet can put put in the front and rear rests so the stock slides easier.

A 10 mph wind at 25 yards will drift a target load .25", and a HV load about .375". A 20 mph wind doubles that. At 50 yards you are looking at 1" drift for a 10 mph wind with a target load. Wind is not your friend with a .22LR.

Hey there Rona AKA, thanks for the info. My target was flappin a bit too with the wind we had here.

I never considered the sling mounts or the fact that the forearm had to slide smoothly, consistently..for each shot. I had tightened the front rest to hold the forearm snug and was considering removing the forearm stop on the rest... But there is some logic to all that. So your forearm sits freely and not snug?

I also wanted to mention that you've helped me with the trigger job. I followed your advice on that other site and wanted to thank you for the incredible info there.

Any other tips? Did you plug the sling mount holes with anything?

Thanks a lot!

I have the same rifle and finally got to shoot it yesterday. Once I sighted in the cheap simmons scope I shot 4 roundsinto a toonie at 100 yards with bulk ammo. I'm impressed!!! Too bad it was so cold and windy at the range, I only managed to stay out there for an hour.

Great rifle for the price!!! Can't wait for gopher season.

Originally I just took the sling pivots out of there and left the holes empty. Later I made a mold and cast a fiberglass block about the length of the rest, 3" wide at the bottom (flat bottom) and about 1/2" high at the edges. I used the sling mount bolt holes to attach the block to the bottom of the fore stock. I just shoot for fun, but I believe they are legit for competition providing they meet width requirements. I tighten the bag so it is snug, but still lets the gun slip back under recoil. I also give the block or stock a wipe with a silicone coated rag to make it slippery.

With the lightened trigger I do not grip the pistol grip, but instead put my thumb behind the trigger guard, and just squeeze the trigger between my thumb and finger.

Before I shot 25 yards I thought it would be a piece of cake. When I actually did it, I found out it was a lot harder than it first looked. The target below was shot using very good ammo (Lapua Midas M) for a fun contest. The objective was to shoot 4 consecutive groups all of which have to be under 0.250" center to center. It took me a few tries. Even at that, the bottom right target ticked me off, and just squeaked in for size. It should have been better, and I have to believe it was me that messed it up. That was with an 18X scope. There probably is a lot to be said for practice.

These are pretty good guns right out of the box. Here are my results at a club match recently. Range: 100 yds. 10 shots on each bull. Light cross wind, maybe 15k/h. Ammo: SK+.

I've found that HV can be accurate, but it tends not to be as consistent. Lower quality standards during manufacture I think. Anyway, I get best results from SV.

My BSEV will put 5 rounds through the same hole at 25 yards off of a stack of socks filled with kitty litter using a Meuller APV 4.5-14. I suprised myself because it looked like I shot the paper once until I looked really closely. Going to put a tacticool on from Boyds and shoot off bipod soon. Are you guys using a rest most of the time?

Well a lot of people were unimpressed with the accuracy of my new .22, but keep in mine all my groups were 10 shots in a stiff wind. Most of my groups were 5 to 6 shots in one hole then the group opened up with the final few shots. Also, I was shooting 5 rounds fairly quickly (less than 15 seconds or so), reloading then firing the remainding 5 rounds. Don't ask me why I was doing it like this, perhaps it's because it was my first time shooting (sighting in) this set up and I was really simply "feeling" the trigger job that I had just done and not trying to be super accurate. I was also seeing what ammo was grouping the best with this gun. The super accurate shooting will come once the trigger is the way I want it. This set up is all new to me including the rests and that powerful scope. So I will report back once I get the right ammo and a nice day. I'm sure BullSh!t will be called on this, but them the facts. Cheers!

25yd targets because of sighting in. next trip will be 30-100 in 10yd increments to find bullet drop at each range. Also, I wouldn't doubt that some of these guys shooting 25yds are indoors...

What's with all the 25 yd targets?

I would rate 25 yards with a rimfire nearly the same difficulty as 100 yards with a centerfire. 100 yards is a very popular distance with centerfire. I suspect many rimfires cannot shoot 4 consecutive 1/4" or less targets at 25 yards.

Are you letting the rifle cool off between shots? A hot barrel is probably the reason the groups are opening up.
