.223 OAL problems

I loaded my last batch of .223 ammo at 2.260 which is what the book specifies. I was looking to load a few new rounds that touch the grooves -.003. I put one of my other rounds 2.260 which fits in the mag, but noticed it pushed my round back into the case. My new measurement is 2.223 is this normal? I was thinking that my rounds would be longer than 2.260 to touch the grooves :confused: My rifle is a rem 700 sps varmint.
 
If it is a relatively blunt bullet this is possible. Usually though factory rifles (and Remington in particular!) have very generous throat lengths so it is virtually unheard of for this to happen with the usual factory ammo combinations of bullet types and OALs.

Wouldn't the 2.260 COL recommendation take into account the bullet type ?

I'd try chambering by hand to see if this still happens. If not, neck sizing/crimping may be the problem,, just my guess.

Paint a ring around a seated bullet with a whiteboard marker jake. Then chamber it and see if rifling marks are present. That would confirm your COL is in fact too long.

Ok thanks guys I will try the marker trick just to see if that is my problem I loaded my 40gr rounds to specs 2.215 and no problem maybe the oal is too long for this rifle I will check thanks for the help!

In some cases load manuals will give COALs that take this sort of thing into account.

But in this case, no. 2.260" is standard maximum magazine length for .223, so all they're really saying is "if you load longer than 2.26 inches your ammo won't fit in an AR-15 magazine"
 
Some rifles like the bullets started into the lands. My Savage Model 12 likes them about .020" back from the lands. Keep seating deeper until you figure out what the gun likes.
