What are the pros and cons of bolt action, lever, pump and semi-auto riffle. I want to purchase a hunting riffle for deer/moose hunting. I will be selling my Russian SKS. Ideally I would like to take deer within 300 yard range. I really want to buy norinco/polytech m14, or anything but bolt action. My last choice is bolt action as they are very expense and have limited choices when it comes to left handed bolt action.

Please tell me the pros and cons of each type. I have read on internet that recently US army is using springfield M14 as sniper riffles. For $600 I can buy Chinese m14 with a scope mount.

Hayya rosh****, go hunting with a Fudd.
He'll teach you some stuff.
What's a riffle?
Double barrel of some sort?
Actions are like women so to speak, what ever ticklles your fancy.
Welcome aboard.
Looky.

Seriously, if people used the search, there'd be nothing left to discuss.

You want any (non-restricted!) that weighs under 10 lbs and shoots, let's say at least a 25 cal bullet over, let's say at least 2432 fps (and not a bit less :) ; those numbers are based roughly on your 300 yard suggestion. After that it's the hunter not the arrow. Out of box accuracy you can be confident in past 150 or 200 yards an you might want one of the cheaper bolt actions.

300 yards is a long way. You planning to hunt in some big hayfield, or are you in otherwise open places? Hope you have done or will do some serious practice. If in a wooded area, go out and see if you can pace off a likely spot where there is a 100+ shot.

Sounds like your best bet for what you want might be a pump in .270.

Guys if you dont like a post because its been done a thousand times thats fine. Dont read it. Enough with bagging on the newbies with thier questions. Keep it polite or dont post. Thanks

Savage,Tikka,Browning,Remington,Winchester and weatherby etc have or do make left handed rifles.
If you think you want a rifle to hunt with you need a hunting rifle. The up front cost on a hunting rifle will be higher but if hitting stuff far away is your goal it's your best bet.
m14 commie, cons:heavy ,not designed for scope use, poor trigger, available in one calibre ,200+ mod threads in Battle Rifle forum.
m14 commie, pro: fun to shoot, easily used as a knife handle.
The U.S. army won't be using any M14's that arent custom built by their armorers.

IMO opinion your last choice should be your first choice, It would be mine.

Way more options available in bolt actions, less moving parts, easier to maintain , stronger actions and more accurate than the others.

For hunting, personally I would stay away from the semi-auto , drop it in the muck and your day is done, a bolt action, run a bore snake through clean off the bolt and carry on.The semi will be more noisy in the field when you cycle it.The lever are good for fast follow up as well as the pump action with a touch more reliability but a little less accuracy in theory.

Check the EE , you can find some decent deals on complete packages ready to hunt.

In the end it is your choice and what you like.

Get a seven pound bolt gun in .270 Win with a Leupold 4x33 mm scope. Best combination of weight, recoil, flat shooting, accuracy and flexibility.

Please someone put a bullet through my head. Or an Arrow Steve Martin and are relatives.

I want to thank everyone who have responded to my post. As far search is concern I had done some of the google searches like "lever vs bolt site: canadiangunnutz.com". But I wanted to get a more thorough answer.

Once again thank you folks.

Bolt Action - best accuracy, most tolerant of a tight chamber, least headspace, easiest to reload for, most tolerant of pressure. I would not consider for a second anything else but a bolt. The only real question is single shot or magazine.

Bolts are best for long range. 243 and up for deer 270 and up for moose Levers are great close up bush pushers usually throwing heavy lead slowly but they work. Marlin makes a 308 and 338 lever action as well. I have 2 pumps with irons a 308 and a 300 savage. Hinge barrel or other single shots are usually light hard kickers but you don't feel that when firing at game and you don't have empties flying across your face. As for semis I will not hunt with one as they're not reliable enough for me and way to much maintence in the field
