Question about the Valmet M78?

The real question is:

The Valmet M78 is non-restricted, why is the FAL prohib?

There is no good reason to prohibit any firearms... Not a single one...

Reason for non restricted status on M-78 Valmet

I owned a Valmet m-78 Hunter in 30-06 once and asked Stoeger Canada who was the original importer of these rifles in Canada and can still supply parts only for them. They told me that a large number of them where owned by native aboriginal Canadian hunters in northern Canada and they or someone lobbied heavily and protested to keep them off the list.Just shows what pulling together and rasing ones voice can do to affect senseless legislation.Hope this answers your question--Dieseldog!

Ok, The fal is prohib but why is the Valmet M78 not??

You've been here since '04, surely you've seen the Valmet thing discussed dozens of times. Bottom line is lots of people have heard one thing or another but I don't think there's an "official" answer.

What I'd like to know is if there were a bunch of Valmets handed out where are they? Has anyone actually met someone who got a rifle given to them? Anyone bought one? Seen one in the wild? I'm not sure I buy the whole story but there doesn't seem to be any better one.

There are threads mentioning and discussing the Valmet M78, picts, exporting and noting the M78, but not dealing specifically with the non restricted vs prohib. This site only has 36 months to back search...

So I asked the question.
