Hey , question for the gurus im thinking of doing a barrel chop on my m14s and was wondering , is the barrel material too hard that trying to use a standard tap and die set to thread it would not work ? or must it be done on a lathe ?

What is the Thread tpi ?

Also if i chop the barrel , is it a MUST to have the flash suppressor reamed before reinstalling it ..

And before anyone mentions it , no im not sending my rifle off for something if i can do it myself. Dont have the money for it .

Lathe is the way to go. Hack saw and die won't do a proper job..

The barrel diameter is FAR too large for a die. You need to reduce the diameter in a lathe first. Even then, you want to cut 80% of the thread depth on a lathe and clean it up with the die at the end... or at least that's how I cheat ;) Some machinists wouldn't be caught dead chasing their threadform with a die, but I'm not as fussy.

No guru here :) but here goes

If you want to reuse it yes and this has been done

...the original flasheliminator is splined inside and looks like this ...you can mount a threaded flash suppressor and use a gas lock sight system as well
