RFB initial thoughts, Range report ***JANUARY 31st ammo test at bottom of OP***

Do you have a 20/5 round mag? Have you used both mags without issue before? I have also heard that if your gas isn't set right , and too much gas is used, the carrier can hit the stops a little too hard causing problems.

Just remember with the RFb that a feeding issue can cause this because it's feeding and ejecting at the same time.

Initially I had some feeding issues with the supplied 20/5 magazine. After lubing it and breaking in the springs it worked fine. I have adjusted the gas setting for this particular ammo and did not encounter this problem until this range trip. Same problem when I used the new 5 rounder magazines.

I did suspect that it was a gas setting issue as the brass appears to be hitting the ramp hard and severely denting the brass with the most extreme case of the brass lodging on the ejection ramp. However, I did follow the procedure of inserting single round magazine and adjusting the gas setting so that the bolt remains open after the fired round. Even at this setting (B+7), the problem persisted.

Wow...I don't even know what to say about this one! I'm at +7 also (PRVI 145g FMJ) and haven't seen or heard of anything remotely like this...yikes. Since following Throttles idea about redoing my 5/20 mag I haven't really had any issues at all (other than the old reloads I have leftover from my father-in-law). Definitely post any findings you might come across...or what Kel-Tec might say.

Received a reply from Keltec and Vault. They think it is the extractor clamp spring and to send in the bolt assembly so they can test and replace the spring.

I haven't had much luck with my RFB to date if you have read my past posts. Looks like I might have got a lemon out of the first batch. Hopefully, I get the bolt assembly back quickly and have no more issues.

The positive side is that the customer service and support from Keltec, Vault and Wanstalls Online has been very good when I have contacted them. They definitely stand behind what they sell.

stll waiting for mine,I thought I would have it soon,I was told the first week of feb I was #6 on the waiting list, called today and now almost 2 months later now I'm # 7,curious

I just finished mounting the Burris Fullfield II with Warne quick release rings on my RFB. I had a spare set of the high rings. I think extra high would be slightly better, but these seem to be ok. I wouldn't want it to be any lower though. I think the scope is just in the decent spot, a bit higher would be preferable but lower and you'd run into cheek weld problems.

I think this combination looks pretty good. The scope looks right proportionally. It's a 3-9x 40mm with 1" tube.

With Eotech 553

With M21. The M21 is better with the RFB and CX4 storm than the Eotech since it's thinner and you can position it so your hand doesn't hit the sides. The Eotech is too wide. Also the quick release on the M21 is on the right side while the 553 has the release on the left side, which can interfere with the newer rifles that have left side charging handles.

Okay, I've been to the range 3 days with my RFB.

First day we didn't have much time, so we simply 'got on paper' at 100 meters... Shot Portugese Nato Ball, groups were about 2.5 to 4 inches.

Second day, I had more time & things went from 2.5 inches to "patterning"... So, I stopped, considered what I could do & bought 3 types of commercial hunting ammo to try. All 150 grain... Things improved, but not a great deal... So I quit for the day. At home I totally dissembled the rifle & checked everything was tight. I also cleaned the heck out of it & noticed that my extractor did not lift the case easily, at least not without some assistance via pushing it up...

Third trip, NEW scope on the rifle, went from a 1-4 power scope to a 3-9x40mm Elite 4200... Weather was worse, but I now notice a trend with my groups & the RFB. Generally, I get two rounds within an inch of each other & then toss one several inches, maybe 4 or 5, vertically higher than the previous two. I thought "okay", I'll put 4 rounds in the mag & shoot three to see if it has something to do with the way the last round might get stripped out of the mag & seated into the chamber... Nope... Two rounds together, one higher...

My thoughts are that I need to find the ammo this thing likes. I forgot the two types of 168 grain ammo I have at home, so I have not tried them through the rifle...

I again cleaned the rifle & noticed that my extractor is now a little looser, lifting the case 'almost' freely by itself... Magic 100 round mark??? The rifle does function almost 100%, with only 2 jams. One happened with me & one with another range visitor that wanted to try the rifle. Both times, the last case from the previous group was not cleared from the action, it was sitting in the 'up' position when another loaded mag was inserted... So, I think it could be one of two things. First the shooter may have not let the bolt go @ the full rearward postion & rode it forward slightly. Second, the spent case sitting in the 'up' position may do something... Subsequent to these two jams, I have fully cleared the rifle after each group & have had NO issues. Maybe the force the rifle operates when fired has more authority to eject the casings than when the shooter inserts a fresh mag & lets the bolt fly? Just a theory...

All to say, I LOVE THIS RIFLE! Despite it being difficult to bench, it's design, compactness & 308 calibre has won my heart! It gets LOTS of attention at the range, as does my Tavor. It IS my new deer rifle!!!

So, I continue to look forward to loads that folks find work well with the RFB. What a GREAT gun!

Cheers
Jay

Jay the rfb will hold on to the case on the last shot. When the next mag is inserted and the bolt is released it will also throw the case down the tube.

I have a bunch of 168 grain loads I'm gonna try as well.

It is my new deer rifle too! I have never taken a photo of my hunted game, but I will be sure to take a photo of my deer with the RFB. Hopefully everyone else will do the same so we can start breaking the silly notion that hunting rifles need to be traditional. In my book traditional = old technology... at least when it comes to hunting.

Me too. Surplus ammo says very little about the rifle... I would really like to see more people trying to push the RFB to its accuracy limit. Sometime soon I hope to have some more information to add to the collective wealth.

Like Throttle monkey said, unlike a traditional semi-auto, which flings the case/cartridge out of the rifle as the bolt is pulled to the rear, the RFB flings the case as the bolt is moved forward.

I have found that the RFB has been a bit of a learning curve to get 'set up', but once you 'figure it out' it runs flawlessly. I think forward ejection should be standard technology on all new rifles. One thing I would like to try rigging up at some point is an ejection port cover - not to keep dirt from entering the chute, but to contain the empty cases.

I think I am going to call it an early day and go do some reloading!

I have some 168 Berger bullets to load up and try. I have my Burris 3-9x mounted and ready to go. Fireball was thinking next week to shoot both of them. I previously tried 175 smk and the results weren't good. Fireball tried them too and his didn't like them either.

The scope is now a better match so hopefully this will make things easier. I threw on a falcon 4.5-18x before but the rings weren't high enough so shooting wasn't much fun.

If you season these rifles with modern metal conditioners such as G96, etc they run flawless from the get go. The night before add some good oil to the contact points as well as the G96.

This also makes cleaning a snap. No scrubbing the receiver. Just wipe off the carbon and repeat the process.

I concur, I'm using CLP and my rifle has run great! My gas system is set at 0 + 7... Cleaning is a breeze!
