1000 metres is possible if the guy knows his kit. If you only wound at that range, there's no chance for a follow up shot. I would have rather hopped back in the boat and drift a bit closer.

From the pic I see....I would range find at between 300 and 400 yards....at 1000 the camera would only show a speck. But after playing the video and seeing the zoom back, it is possible. Did not see the rifle or scope, and when it shows the people near the moose, if it had been a clean kill with a spine near the rear quarters, then why so much blood out the mouth. How long did it suffer until they arrived at the moose and give it the coup d' gras?

Still a very risky shot except for a very experienced marksman. A belly shot would have probably ended with a lost, long suffering death for the moose. I personally would never attempt that shot. I think he was very lucky.

Proof of great marksmanship if that's where the shot was intended to hit.

Proof of great hunting skill would have been to get within 100 yards.

Therefore not impressive, IMO. May as well set up a target across the lake. To each his/her own.

Whatever the distance, it was phucking irresponsible.
I shudder to think of all the morons watching "Best of the West" on Wild TV, buying one of those Huskemaw scopes, and then going out banging away, wounding game at rediculous ranges.

I know of a number of guys that think they can shoot game @ rediculous ranges because they now shoot a magnum.

Two in particular stand out. One is afraid of his rifle, and the other shoots 4-5'' groups @ 100yds the best of days with any rifle. Regardless of this they still both think they are Quigley..To make things worse, these two hunt together.

Hard to tell from the film but if you watch it several times you'll see it seems to 'cut' as the camera pans out.

It'd be a VERY nice shot (bordering on irresponsible) if it was real but I call BS.

If someone wants to download it and go frame to frame from shot to hit you could get a good estimate of the range. At about 1 second and 2500 fps average for the first second. my guess is 2500/3 = more than 800 yards.

I've shot moose as close as 30 feet, and most of the others less than 100 yards. I suppose if you're trigger happy and you never seen a moose before... not a shot I would take or recommend to anyone.

My thoughts exactly. That's the kind of idiot who gives hunters a bad name. He got away with it that time - I'll bet he's not bragging up the videotapes of the times he tried it and left a wounded animal to rot in the bush.

If its any consolation, these sound like the same kind of guys who can't judge distance so the 500 yard shots they (likely) brag about (and equally likely, don't practice shooting at) are probably more like 150.

Regarding the OP's video, there no reason to take a shot like that at all. He probably could have just walked up in plain view with absolutely no skill involved to within at least 300 yards.

That is a guy in Fort Nelson BC. He shoots long range a lot. There was a long discussion on huntingbc.ca last year about it. Either he or his buddy participated in the discussion. Good shot.

I buy the distance(ish) but as the consensus seems, what was the need to take 1000 yard shot? Could he have gotten closer?
