Attacked by wolves, according to the photographer.

yeah, nature isn't pretty and bambi or bulwinkle don't close their eyes and go peacefully in their sleep.

One year as a kid, (in the middle of a prolonged cold spell), I was really shocked to see a deer drag its self by its front legs while a coyote ate away at its crippled hindquarters. Went back and got a gun to put the deer out of its misery.

Coyote was smart though, the meat was easier to eat "fresh" than frozen. Mother Nature is efficient but has no concept of what cruelty is.

I wonder how a live animals pain receptors differ from ours if any?

From what I remember hearing somewhere(FWIW), most animals that are typicaly a prey, like moose, bovines, antelope block pain when they have a predator on their heel. Adrenaline will keep them going despite deadly wounds. It only starts hurting later. Nothing different from humans, but probably better. We often hear that taking a bullet doesn't hurt immediatly, at least that's what an Afganistan vet told me.
