just picked up a new HMR. Is there a need to break it in like a centre fire? By that I mean something like fire it once clean it, fire x2 clean it, fire 3x clean etc..

Or can I say fire it 10 times clean, fire 20 times clean, 50 x clean and than consider it broken in?

Thanks!

break it in like a centerfire, just kinda good habit to get into. i broke mine in like a centerfire and since have put in excess of 3500 rounds through it with no real barrel wear. your gun will thank you

thanks for the advise. I suppose spending the extra time is worht it.

Quick question, I did not pick up a brush for the HMR. I heard they aren't good or nessicary for the HMR. So to clean during the break in I was planning on just running patches through. GOod idea or should I pick up a brush?

i use bore snakes for break in, then alternate swabs and boresnakes, otis kits for swabs and hoppes for boresnakes i find are the best but it is always personal preference, brushes arent overly necessary

I don't clean my rimfires nearly as much as my centerfires. Get a good one piece rod, a proper bore guide, and clean the barrel when the accuracy falls off.

I'm going to have to say threw my experences that you will need a brush. I let mine go about 300 rounds before cleaning and it had a nice ring of carbon in the throat. At first I couldnt get a jag or a new brush past the carbon. I had to use a really worn out brush and scrub.

I use Butches Bore Shine. I brush it as much as it needs it.

I use a one peice Dewey stainless coated rod. With a bore guide.

Mine seems to have very little affect on accuracy after shootinga few boxxes. Just gets to be hard to clean.

I'm thinking the higher velocity and copper jacketed bullets make the 17hmr more like a centre fire than a rimfire in terms of barrel deposits. That said, its still open to debate whether breaking in a barrel requires a special cleaning regimen. It's certainly worth determining if copper fouling is occurring. Can't imagine that's good for accuracy if its occuring abnormally.

Picked up a cleaning kit for the HMR. Holy the rod is a tight fit down the bore. It fits and slides no problem but there isn't much wiggle room. WIth a wet patch on it slides ok, but than I ran a few dry patches down VERY tight. The kit came with brass brush and also a big fluffy brush. I didn't try to put either down the bore as it hasn't been shot yet, but I have my doubts it will be easy to push either one down.

I am hoping that you have a one piece cleaning rod.

all they had was 3 peice... after taking it to the range today i am DEFINITLY ordering a 1 peice rod and bore guide.

gun was quite accurate right out of the box at 50-75 yards. My shots were jupming around 1/2 inch, but I only put 15 rds in it. Should settle down after a box or two.

going to look for some gophers tomorrow.

yeah ive heard that word alot lately. Been trying to call them when they are open but keep calling when they are closed. LOL Want to order one for a .17hmr, .22lr, .204, .270wsm and a 12 gauge for my 210F

I ordered all of mine online.

-Clean bore before firing to remove shipping preservative
-Shoot until accuracy drops off
-Clean bore again

Barrels do not need to be broken in.

I'm pretty sure I've only cleaned the barrel on my savage twice in about 5 years and at least 5,000 rounds. I only cleaned it just because. I think it will be a long time before I do it again, it's as accurate as it was from day one and needless cleaning is, well, needless.:)
