Got this in the mail today......:)

1960 vintage Pre'64 Model 70 action, 24" Shilen Match tube recontoured to a Douglas profile. McMillan Supergrade stock, built, bedded and blued by the master of the Model 70 himself,.. Bill Leeper...thanks Bill...I like it a lot.;)

The scale says 8lbs 7 oz as pictured with 3.5-10X Leupold VX-III in Leupold mounts. I wanted to go with low rings but the bolt handle interfered with the ocular bell.....may have to search out some different mounts.

Welcome to the Elite club.
This in my opinion is the ultimate all round chamber.
Long legged little swine.
That is one nice unit you have there Rembo.
Can the bolt handle be modified to clear the optics?
Or find a scope with less bulk on the rear profile?
Post some targets when you get'er dialed in.

Should be a shooter, looks good to. The only 308 Norma i tried was not pleasant to fire, it was a Schultz & Larsen. That was the only rifle i quite shooting after 5 shots. Post some results when you get it sighted in.
 
Gee that is nice Rick. Bill, as usual, did a fantastic job and what nice work on that barrel profile!

Go S&K lows with bases that will center the rings between the screw holes for that setup. RickF should be able to confirm if they will allow the bolt handle to clear, but I think they do.

If I can ever get a barrel, Bill can start on mine!
 
Re 19 /H4831is great with 180gr IMR4350 with the 150's Haven't tried the 165 yet.....make brass from .300 Win Mag and trim..............Harold
 
I went with the 308 Norma over the 300 Win because of the 3.4" mag box of the Pre'64 M70...only reason it's a 30 caliber is I had the barrel kicking around for over three years and thought I really should do something with it. I had an original Pre'64 M70 in 300 Win Mag about 10 years ago and it was definetly too short in the mag box for this round, the Norma fits better.
I have an old set of RCBS dies in the cardboard box and some new 300 Winny brass....time to get loading....I expect it to be quite accurate.

Same/Same, only the Norma has a little more neck and shorter OAL so fits better in most mag boxes.

Your new Supergrade will have the 3.6" mag box if you remove the spacer....I'd go 300 Win on that one....but, then you could sell your 30-06 and buy a new M70 in 300 Winny with a 26" barrel....

In the mid 1960s Schultz and Larson rifles, mostly in 7x61 and 308 Norma, became very popular in north central BC. I was in a store which sold a lot of them. We also sold a lot of Norma ammunition. We thought the Norma ammo was loaded very hot. Had a fair bit of trouble with the 7x61 and sometimes the 308.
We had a 308 Norma that locked up solid on the first shot fired out of it, with a Norma factory load!
A flabbergasted owner brought it back, with the bolt too tight to be opened by hand. I took it in the back and a very good swat with a piece of wood opened it. In this case the chamber was cleaned thoroughly with a 410 shotgun brush and the rifle worked well, ever after. Some rifle owners have given their rifles too much TLC, by oiling the chamber, and this may have been the case here.
However, the Norma ammo of the day, which appeared very hot, had a "R" stamped on the base. Later Norma ammo did not have this R on it.
So, I am wondering, if you or your Dad, ever chronographed the ammo with the R, and if so, how did it compare with the ammo that does not have the R?
Or, has your Dad ever talked about this early Norma ammo?
 
Further to my note just posted, I have given a 1960s Norma factory loaded 7x61 cartridge, with the R on it, to Johnn Peterson, on here.
Hopefully, he will get around to chronographing it, and see how it compares with later made Norma 7x61.
 
That is a clean classy looking rifle for sure - and I second Chucks motion for S&k rings. Classy low profile rings and bases will be a nice touch. I just ordered some direct from them and they will ship direct. Can't wait to hear how it shoots.

Hi Bruce, I still have it and will get to it once things slow down a bit. Don't know where the time flies ;)or how I ever had time for work. With the weather impovements I should get to it before too long.

I have a few different 7x61 S&H items to check as well and marked Re.
I have a handful of loose Norma factory cartridges that were given to me, the specifics of which I don't have a clue.
  • One box of Norma factory Super 150gr SPBT.
  • Two boxes of Norma factory Super 154gr SP spire point, primers marked NP.
  • One box New Custom Ammunition by Custom Reloading Service, 154gr red plastic tips, cases marked Re.
  • A 'few' boxes of my reloads with the change over to Barnes in a couple of weights.
Should get to this chrony testing shortly after our upcoming 'visit' to Alberta:D:D.
For the 7x61 S&H I've traded off all my earlier production brass and the plan is to go with that stamped Super for my reloads.
