So, im still on the fence about what scope to put on my savage .223

I was going to put a Bushnell Trophy XLT with the DOA 600 reticle, but after some thinking, im not sure its best suited for my needs.

As it sits, there is a run of the mill 3x9x40 bushnell on it now. I will be doing predator hunting with the rifle, and im looking for input on what scope would suit the gun. I looked at the redfield 4x12x40 and the nikon coyote special, in the same power.

I dont have a lot of cash to throw at a scope, so id say 350 plus tax is my absolute max on budget.

if someone has suggestions, comments id greatly appreciate it!

I am a fan of maginifaction. 3x-9x won't cut it in the long run. Trust me. To me 6x-18x is the minimum.

My 308 has a 12x-32x on it. That is about perfect to me.

You want all the magnification you can have without mirage.

even though it's a pain in the arse to buy from the USA, at least use the US sites like opticsplanet or adorama to compare prices and see on which scopes you're paying a fair price and on which ones you're getting hosed up here, cuz with a limited budget you want as much of it to go to the scope and not to silly forms or paperwork or permits or markups.

as much as i love Nikon stuff, the prices up here (at least at SAIL) are far too high compared to other manufacturers when you factor in the exchange rates.

personally i have a bushnell 6500 and a sightron s2bigsky and i'm happy with both - but they each cost over $500.

Is this Savage you speak of a sporter or heavy barrel? What type of hunting do you plan on doing with this rifle? Walking/stalking or sitting/calling?

I put a VXII 3x9 on my lightweight 223AI. It's perfect for the rifle. A bigger/heavier scope on this rifle would be counter productive to the type of hunting I will do with it.

A larger scope would work on a heavy bbl. A 4x12 or 6x18 would be plenty of magnification for coyotes.

The savage axis i have a is a fairly light gun, however...newfoundland coyotes rarely come withing 100 yards. having said that...id like a decent scope with a bullet drop compensator of some sort as i usually have the range finder with me and i sit in a blind. i normally have markings that i range at various distances.
