Pros and Cons of the AR-15 .22 Conversion

If money is no object, a dedicated .22lr AR would be the way to go.

However, the conversion kits (all similar in design) are solid, reliable and good fun on the cheap; choose shiny or not shiny (the chrome/stainless finish is easier to clean.) That's about it.

It's also recommened to put a few .223 after a range session to avoid crud build-up in the gas tube.

FWIW, I have the Spikes kit from Questar.

they are fun but they get very dirty very fast. it makes for lots of cleaning after the range, but its worth it. i had a stainless .22 bolt. i would just hose it with gun cleaner spray and blow it off with the compressor, and just scrub the bolt face and that was usually enough for the bolt.

the gun requires your usual heavy clean

the real down side is you dont get that satisfying 'BOOOOM!' each time. just a 'plink-plink-plink'

I had a couple issues with mine doing a double tap. Cleaned the hell out of it and then it was fine. Some may think this is fun, I think it was dangerous.... got rid of it. Also caused a dirtydirtydirty chamber.... worse then normal.

I'm curious as to why you think it is dangerous?

I got an email from Scott at Questar today; apparently Spikes Tactical no longer makes drop in conversion kits, they only sell dedicated .22 parts. So I guess we are limited to the CMMG kits in Canada. Does anybody know of any others? Are there any dealers for the Stag Arms kit? It is starting to sound like I might be better off getting a dedicated colt .22.

I love my CMMG conversion kit. I highly recommend it.

I second that.

I will know tomorrow if I can +3 this or not. Just got my Norc M4 in the mail today and have a CMMG kit waiting to go on it. I have tried the CMMG kit on a buddies Colt AR and it worked very well, with ~1 jam every 75 rounds with the Winchester 333 ammo. Federal 525 pack ammo jammed a bit more, but those were the first rounds it saw and it got smoother with use.

I use the CMMG stainless kit in my AR and highly recommend it.
It had a few issues extracting spent casings during my first range session. When I got home I sanded the action rails with 300grit sandpaper(finest I had) until it was shiny. The kit has run flawlessly on Win555's ever since.
I was so impressed I ended up buying 4x 25rnd Black Dog mags and a loader.
After a few hundred rounds I shoot a mag of .223 to clear out the gas tube and give it a routine cleaning.
