What about cutting down a Finn M91?

As I don the flame suit.....I was thinking about having my gunsmith cut down my Finnish VKT M91 into a 91/59 length carbine. The rifle is beat to hell however the bore is in good to great condition. I of course would also cut down and re rivet the handguard as well as the stock. Is there really any collector value in a rifle that is so badly beaten?

My 2 cents = leave it alone, It's worth $300 to $450 as it is. These rifle are hard to find, leave it alone and go get an M91/30 and make the M91/59.

You sell this rifle and you will have money left over for the hideous gunsmithing and such...

Is this what your looking for? http://w ww.mosinnagant.net/ussr/m9159-carbine.asp

Perhaps buy an M38?? and have money left over?

I wouldn't cut a finn

If you want a shorter rifle. sell me your finn and buy an m44. Or trade me for a refurb to cut. Or just sell me the rifle.

Ideally I want a 91/59. I just sold (still on the floor in a cardboard box) a minty M44 Polish carbine that I was too nice to take hunting. I never made a cent off it, I just have too much of a conscience to use it. Now I have this Finn M91. I am sure it's a great shooter as all Finns are. I just really don't know what to do with it. It isn't a safe queen nor is it really suitable for hunting (I love the x54r for big game). What I want is a M91/59. Perhaps I will try it in the EE.

This M91 is in a very good condition for its age ,especially if you consider where it came from.

Please, don't cut it-sell it,get Polish M44 and you will have some $ left for ammo :)

It will be cheaper in the long run to just buy the carbine you want. You won't get too much respect on this site for hacking a good Finn. I picked up a m44 east german carbine a few months ago for 175 bucks. It was like brand new for half or a third the price of what you want to cut up.

Either way, don't destroy your Finn M91. Keep it. Sell it to someone who really wants one and pick up the rifle you want with the cash. Trade it. Just don't hack it up.

See...! Sell it and buy a M44, money in the bank to buy ammo..

I wouldn't make a total blanket statement like that. Just because it came out of Finland didn't pass it through the 'magic MOA milsurp machine'. I've got a Tikka M91 that won't shoot worth a dam, but it's a collector.

That stock has a stamping on it that I've never seen before, and I've done more research than most this side of the border on the Finns. I would strongly recommend against making any 'improvements' to the rifle.

The Finns wouldn't have it if it couldn't shoot. I would say there is an issue with your rifle. Most likely the crown.

I just agreed to buy one exactly like your or even better for $350.00.
But yours has some interesting stamps. You should either keep it for collection or put it up for sale and use the money to get another Mosin. Like some said, there are many great shooting and almost mint M-44 and M-38 to acquire that don't have the collector appeal your VKT has.
It would be sad to cut this one up.
PP. :)

I got a sling coming for it. I am going to take it bear hunting..maybe I will get lucky. :)

Good to hear! Admittedly, they are rare and I retract my statement about cutting one down. I just prefer carbines. Ones you can actually acquire for under 1000 dollars. :slap:
