So I am a shotgun noob and recently bought two used shotguns.

1. Cooey model 84, 2 3/4", 30" bbl, fixed full choke
2. Remington 870 Wingmaster 2 3/4", 18.5" bbl, cyl bore, synthetic stock

Not sure on the year of manufacture for each one, but I know the Wingmaster was used as a truck gun by Brinks for quite some time (probably fired less than 100 times, but beat up on the outside)

I have a few questions about what can be shot through each one.

Cooey: Can I shoot rifled slugs? 00 buckshot? Steel shot? (I believe the choke might have to be opened up to improved before shooting steel?)

Wingmaster: Rifled slugs or non rifled? Steel shot?

What if down the line I want to get a new barrel for the wingmaster. Could I get a 3" chamber barrel and would it still fit in the receiver?

I wouldn't shoot anything but lead through the Cooey.
The wingmaster however, you can get a barrel with screw in chokes for steel, but only shoot 2 3/4" shells through it.

the wingmaster already has cyl bore so is good for rifled slugs,00 etc definately no steel ever in that barrel rifled slugs are for smooth bore barrels saboted slugs which are a lot more expensive are for barrels that have rifleing as already mentioned in the previous post you can buy different replacement barrels to suit your needs

the cooey lead only and i wouldn't use anything bigger than #5 shot because of it having a full choke

Why not?

The Wingmaster (with that barrel) will handle any 2 3/4" shell available. Patterns wont hold up, but you'll be able to shoot just fine.

Express barrels will fit the wingmaster, you'll just have to replace the mag cap as well. I am huge Wingmaster fan, best pump gun ever built.

Shoot any lead you want out of the cooey in 2 3/4. The guy above I dont think has any idea what hes talking about. #5 shot? Doesnt mean anything. Ive shot hundreds (if not thousands) of rounds of #4 through a full choke and havent hurt anything

You can use any size lead shot in the Cooey. And if you open it up to modified I wouldn't be afraid to shoot steel through it. If the steel scratches or marks the bore does it really matter. It's a 100 to $150.00 gun. So if it means shooting steel through it (choke opened up) or sitting in the corner, I know what I would be doing.

well the cooey was $79+tax and the rem 870 was $150+tax so Im not going to loose sleep over a few scratches. I just dont want any of them exploding on me if I shoot the wrong load.

Not planing to open up the choke on the cooey, I will just avoid steel shot, but to confirm: lead rifled slugs/ 00 buckshot are still ok?

The wingmaster while rough on the outside functions 100% and the barrel is shiny like a mirror. Again to confirm: steel shot, 00 buck, rifled slugs will all be fine?

Shoot whatever you want out of the Wingmaster.

I have been told to not shoot slugs through a full choke, and have been told its fine. Me, I wouldnt, but thats up to you. I'd without question shoot any lead shot through it.

People have been shooting rifled slugs / buckshot through Cooey full chokes for ever and killing lots of deer. Rifled slug manufacturers say they can be used in any choke, but may give better accuracy through more open chokes.

x3

Lead compresses and the rifling on the slug is not as much to impart spin as to act as a buffer between the barrel walls and the slug and they easily compresses to fit through any choke - they're supposed to be more accurate through open chokes. That's why most of the old smoothbore Deerslayers are Cyl.

Excellent, thanks all for the info.

Now to buy some slug and buckshot molds and start casting and reloading!

Doesnt seem like there are any savings reloading bird/target shot

so I tried some 00 buck that I loaded by substituting shot for various amounts of buck (6, 7, 8, and 9) in remington gun club and federal top gun shells thought the 870, it shot fine through the 870 but I forgot to try it thought the cooey. I will have to make some more up and try
