UTG Tri Rails and Scope Rings Advice Needed

Hey guys, looking for a bit of advice here.

So, I have a 10x scope coming in the mail that I have been eagerly awaiting for a few weeks now. My UTG Tri Rail showed up yesterday and I got it mounted without any problems. Just for fun, I tried mounting one of my neglected rifle scopes on my M14's new tri rail just to test the rings, but it had terrible eye relief and the scope rings were too low, resulting in the scope not fitting right. This is rather concerning due to the fact that I was trying a 4x scope out, and the 10x scope that I am expecting will be bigger, meaning that it won't fit either.

This is my dilemma. I am going out to buy a new set of scope rings today but have absolutely zero experience with scopes and optics of any sort. I have always been an iron sights kind of guy and I feel kind of dirty mounting a scope on my M14 in the first place. Sadly, the only place I can make it to is Wholesale Sports, but I don't trust the people who work there to know their ass from their elbow when it comes to scopes or M14s.

My main question being:

What scope rings do you guys use on your UTG Tri Rails? (A specific answer would be greatly appreciated)

The only info I came across was for scope rings on Arms 18 mounts and such, which to my knowledge don't suffer from the problem of the scope hitting the hand guard.

Thanks in advance for your help everyone. Also, I apologize in advance for any obvious mistakes I have made, as scopes are not something I am familiar with in the slightest.
 
I used Leupold low rings and actually got them at WHole sale sports. I mounted my scout scope on my M14. They fit perfectly with just a hair of clearance between the rail and the bell on the scope. Take the rifle and scope to the store and they will let you put the 2 bottom parts of the ring on the rail so you can rest the scope on them and see the clearance and height.
 
Thanks for the info. Sadly, I will be going in on my way back from work, so I won't be able to bring my rifle with me.

I will be sure to check out the Leupold low rings. Wholesale has a pretty good return policy, so the worst case scenario is I have to go back and trade them in for a set of high rings.

I had to use high rings (I think they are burris) to get my shepherd 40mm objective to clear the rail. mediums wouldn't work, now I do have my scope mounted on the charger guide rail and the tri-rail so don't know if that makes a difference but it shouldn't
 
Hi Gideon, I know that a scope ring base to saddle hight of .5 inch is too low for a scope with a objective outside diameter of 2.168 inches on a UTG rail. With those measurements the scope just touches the rail. I will be looking for mounts that have a base to saddle hight of .75 inches for a little extra clearance. Hope this helps you, Mark
 
I gave up using the UTG rail for a traditional scope and have gone to an Aimpoint on it, just in front of the rear of the rail. I couldn't find any mount that worked in the stripper clip guide that aligned at the proper height to match the UTG rail--some were close but I was worried that it'd wreck the scope. I'm thinking now that the UTG rail is best for forward mounted scopes only, and if you want to use a traditional scope a receiver mounting solution (Like the ARMS 18) is the way to go.

This and any scope with a 4 to 5 inch eye releaf works perfectly ;)
 
Do not mount a scope on the UTG rail.. at least on my gun they where not fully level. Would you trust that for 500 yard shot ?

Use a scope mount made for that. I use one made by a the guys at m14 . ca that allow you to still have the utg rail mounted.. for other accessory:

On the plus side, the mount look exactly like the receiver at normal ligth.

mine are perfectly level on both of my rifles.
 
I had this problem as well, unable to clear the rear aperture site. My solution was to mount a Yankee Hill scope riser rail purchased from Fabsports that spanned the stripper clip rail to the forearm rail. Raised the scope just enough with Burris high rings and with a cheek riser installed I have a great weld.

I had no issues with leveling on mine either btw.

Good to know. I have been looking at the scope riser as a backup plan. I am hell bent on keeping my UTG rail, I just love how it makes my M14 look, so I will be trying anything and everything possible to make it work.

Worst case scenario, I buy a Remington 700 to mount my scope on and buy an Aimpoint for my M14. Either outcome sounds pretty nice to me.

I used YH risers too--I would've kept this if I could've lined up the front and back mounts. It was a good fit with the VLTOR stock but with even the small misalignment front and back it would've ruined the scope if I had torqued the screws down. I never fired it in this config, although it looked cool. My M14 is originally from around 2003...maybe newer ones are better. I'd suggest taking a very close look though--it's awfully hard to exactly line up the mounts in two different planes.
