Russian SVD style reticle

1.5 and 0.5 it is the range finding scale. imagine 1.5 tall dear if it fits between the lines at 200m it means that the distance is 200 if it fits at 800m it means it is 800m. It would be best if Teapot would explain it.
Wikipedia also gives preaty good explenation.
Vertical chevrons are calibrated but you have to use them with a vertical click wheel on the scope. Dragunov recticle is meant to be sighted in at 100m

I had the opportunity to look thru one just today for the first time. My "new" Russian friend who owned the rifle set up explained it thusly and I'm not sure I fully understand him but: If you had a man size target @ 300m the operator would use the bottom chevron. He indicated the setting on the up sweep as meters,then by going from that indicator straight across to the chevron would be the bottom one.
His which was military, was black and the yardage {up swept graph} was a lot closer to level with the top chevron...but still below however. No way as nearly pronounced as the pic above.
It seemed to me that the scope has a built in ability to shoot accurately at multiple distances without having to compensate for a distance that would not be "zeroed in" on a traditional hunting scope. Let's say you hunt deer @ 100m and your set up is zeroed for that....and your target pops up at 600m...you have two choices right,fiddle fart with your scope or compensate for the distance. With the Russian scope it's all there like a ladder elevation rear sight,but in a scope! cool eh!

7.62x54 reticle can be used for 308 similar enough trajectories but if you are looking for specific 308 trajectory Yugoslav ZRAK PSO based scopes are available made specifically for 308

The horizontal scale is mils. The "any caliber" is a lie.

Yup, that's right :)

One note however, is that the Soviet/Russian "mil" is slightly different than the Western one. Not enough difference at short to moderate ranges but significant at longer ones. If memory serves me right, our mil is about 3.6 inches---theirs is approx 4" at 100 yds.

On a real SVD/Dragonov rifle scope, there is a range compensation drum. You dial in the number (range) and use the first inverted chevron reticle for anything under 1000 meters. Over 1000m, the chevron underneath is used for 1100m. Underneath that chevron, are two more which supposedly correspond to 1200m and 1300m range compensation holdovers respectively.

Hope this helps!

Another thing has me confused, There is reference to 7.62x39mm. I don't think this scope set up was ever intended for such a light powder load. {surely the Russians didn't bolt this scope to an AK?}

No, it wasn't supposed to be for 762 x 39. The 762 x 39 scope reticle only ranges up to 400m.

I suppose in the rush to sell stuff, some dealers may come up with ways to use scopes designed for 762 x 54 rounds for the 762 x 39 !

i wonder if there are scopes available with that reticle that are calibrated to calibers more common in north america, like .308 win or .223 rem that'd be slick i'd get one for sure

Speaking of calibration do they have one for the 8mm mauser?. Just purchased the PSOP scope mount for an 8mm mauser :).
