AR-15 handload catastrophe

AR-15 explodes with mis-loaded cartridge.

Some guy used pistol powder in his reloaded .223 cartridge. Steeper power curve + too much powder + enclosed space = blammo. The guy's basically OK but the gun is toast.

I think he expected that his cartridges were loaded with rifle powder!
I'm still curious as to how he got powders mixed... maybe had some pistol powder in his scale/tickler?

The shooter was ok, other than getting whacked in the face with the charging handle and having small pieces of the carbon fiber freefloating tube embedded in his forearm.

He's very lucky that's all he got off with...

I know that some guys use pistol powders for plinking, could have been an accidental double charge. An xcr would have been unscathed and completed the day shooting hyper velocity laserbeams

I am sure he expected it to go bang and load the next one right behind it.

Pistol powders can be used to load rifle loads. As with everything, you need to pay attention to what you are doing.

He should be happy it's only going to cost him $3-4,000 to rebuild, he's lucky to be alive.

I agree Katana. Handloading not to be feared but respected. When one is laying his/her nose against that charging handle and squeezing, 100,000 psi even in a small package is very very dangerous.

"Last" line of defense always will be good quality shooting/safety glasses, can't stress it enough. Your face may look like it took a 20mm cannon hit but you will probaly be able to see.

A gift that without, none of us would probaly be participating in this sport, even just to bling bling something.
