This was with my wife's grandfathers stuff. It was with some 50 BMG rounds that had been made into table cigarette lighters and bottle openers.

It's 4 or 5 inches long and about 7/8" in diameter. I should have included something for scale.

It has what looks like a brass driving band near the base and the body is steel.

The nose is a threaded cap which unscrews to reaveal a cavity (empty).

Anybody know what it is?

Thanks.

Twenty mil for sure, but for which gun? There were just so many.

Being that it's on this side of The Great Puddle, I would think for an Oerlikon or a Hispano. Air Force used a lot of Hispanos on the Spits and other fun toys, Navy used piles of Oerlikons, as did Army for flak duty.

Nice point is that this one has never been loaded, so you won't have to ask the police to make it safe for you!

A fine remembrance.

Well I guess it was only a mystery to me....Thanks everyone.

Maybe I'll do a little research, clean it up and paint it one of those colours.

So when these are fired the body of the shell must ride the bore and the driving band fills the rifling grooves? Is that right?

I never had a clue that 20mm projectiles were made of hollow steel.

You are correct on that, friend. Shell body is MUCH too hard; it would rip the rifling out of the barrel. So they use a copper driving-band which is swedged onto the shell body, in a reeded groove to keep it in place, then shoot it at your friendly local Heinkel 111. Copper band takes the rifling, drives the shell at the same time, also seals the bore. You could do rifle bullets the same way except that it is expensive.

 I found one like that in my house too.

Has a steel shell and black plastic drive band, also seems to have some kind of electronic fuse inside

it is a bacteriological shell developed by the Iraqi army, probably smuggled out of the country when Sadam tried to dispose of them. If the shell starts to hum and vibrate, run! It seems to affect only women, but will cause spasms and convulsions, the eyes may roll back in the skull, and they start to moan in agony.

i saw something scimilar when i was on a bombing range i was a cadet on work detail there marking targets. anyways there was a few A10 `s strafing ground targets . was awesome to watch , anyways the rounds were non explosive but had an aluminum nose cap like the one in piccy and an otherwise empty bullet .
i recoverd a bunch as targets was on a beach . also got to blow up a few unexploded practice bombs too . bomb disposal guys were awesome
