I need some advice on how to fix a problem with my Dad's Marlin 336 in 35rem. The problem is that even with the peep sight bottomed out as much as I can the gun still shoots about 8" high. The adjustable part of the sight does not fit over the reciver fully, it hits on one side and if I milled out the on chamfer on the one side I could move it a little lower, but I am still not sure it would be enough. Should I modify the sight or would putting a taller front post on be a better solution?

Any tips or leds would be appreciated.

Thanks

Taller front sight.
You can calculate the height difference you need up front to get you on target.
The following is from Brownells tech pages.

Determine Sight Height

Use the following equation to determine the height change you need to make:
Sight change =

Sight Radius X Impact distance
_________________________
Target distance

Sight radius: Distance between front and rear sight

Impact distance: Measurement from point of aim to bullet impact

Target distance: Measurement from muzzle to target

Sight change: Amount of correction needed

Sight rule: Move rear sight in the direction you want the bullet to move. Move front sight the opposite direction you want the bullet to move.

Here's a link to a chart as well that might be easier,

I've run in to this problem, too. You need a front sight so high that you have to take off the front sight hood. I gave up and stayed with the semi-buckhorn rear sight.

Which Williams is it? The FPs all seem to be OK with stock front sights, though they also come in a kit with a bunch of different front sights.

Is your dad's Marlin an older one with the front sight dovetailed into the barrel, or is it a later on with a base screwed into the barrel? Each will require a different sight height due to the sight's local on the barrel. If it is a newer one with a base and pressed in front sight from my experience they usually sight in with Williams peeps just fine.

regards, Darryl

you will have to change out your front sight unfortunately due to the size you will need the front hood will no longer fit

The fornt sight base is screwed to the barrel and the post is dovetailed into it. It never had a hood according to my dad.

Thanks for the help I will check Brownells and try a taller post.

Is it a top (fp-336) or side (94/36) mounted Williams? Top mount will require a taller front sight but a side mounted one usually works fine with factory ramped front sights but not always. Check out skinner sights, reasonably priced and high quality sights for marlins.

Marlin with a Williams peep.

I bought a "trucky" Marlin .30.30 from a fellow CGNer about 3yrs ago.It came with a pretty Williams peep rear and a god-awful home made tall:ar15: uglier than ever front sight.Well....this is one deadly accurate combination.I say,get a taller front sight, lower your aim and you will not look back.

Wouldn't raising the peep have the same affect as raising the post? Dunno?

No, if you raise the rear sight your shots climb up. when you raise the front sight shots go down. Reverse reactions. if you remove height from the front sight the shots move up, but thats no help if its already hitting too high. the only way to fix it is to raise the front post height or lower the rear aperture.

Installing a new front is easy but its best to use a sight pushing tool rather than a drift punch for ramped sights because the ramp screw can shear off in the barrel while tapping on the sight. or if the screw is not under the sight in the dovetail you can take it off, put it in a vise and then drift it out with a brass punch.

I'd use the time and money to upgrade your front sight to a "fire site" of some kind, they come in ass't. heights so you can get the proper zero.

I have a 36 beater 30-30 i purchased a few yrs ago with same problem. Would like to try it with a shorty ramp on front, however it appears to have replacement sights and the front band is in contact with the front sight. A tang sight may also work, but a new one will cost more than I paid for the carbine,( it's already drilled and tapped). Anyone know of a cheap used one?

Its a fp-336. I am going to put a taller front firesight on and try that.

Thanks for the help.
