to buy one, or not to buy one. I want it for clays and water fowl so it must be rated for steel shot. I dont know much about hunting birds so any advice would be good.

It has to be around 500 because for 1000 i would get a ###y semi auto. I like the over-under look but don't know how practical it would be for hunting birds.

Also, whats better 20g or 12g for waterfowl and other birds.

All input is welcome and appreciated.
 
500 could get you a good semi or an OK overunder

overunders arent any good from what ive seen in a duck blind, but are better for the clays.

If u hunt more than target shoot, get a semi. If u target shoot more, get the overunder.


As for the 12-20ga... get the 12. cheaper shells, and more punch for those longer shots

If you are looking for a new over/under for $500.00 then don't waste your money. A good, quality (notice I said quality) over/under usually costs more than a semi-auto. However, if you want to look for a used o/u, you can find some deals on quality guns, especially the Japanese guns that were built for Ithaca or Charles Daly etc. Over/unders are nice for clays shooting and upland game in the smaller, lighter gauges. You don't see them in the duck blind that often but it is a personal choice. There are those who hunt waterfowl with the smaller gauges but I believe 12 gauge is all around better for waterfowl, especially on longer shots or big geese. See, that's why you need more than one gun; one for waterfowl and one for upland in smaller gauge. Oh, and in my opinion I think you got it wrong. A nice over/under is ###ier looking than a semi anyday and a SxS ###ier than an over/under.
 
I also need a new shotgun because I want to take up goose hunting after close to 20 years away from it. All my older guns won't take the steel shot so looking at something new. I have always loved the look of the over/under and to me they are a very safe gun as they are easy to tell when the action is open. I'm thinking for $500 there is some nice pump guns out there--have you looked at them?

I'd also add that if you are looking at a cheap O/U they are usually lighter in weight. Start shooting some heavy goose loads out of them and you'll learn where the saying "kills on one end and wounds on the other" comes from.

Not to be rude, but... Forget the idea.

It's just not going to happen to find a(decent)steel shot capable O/U to use for clays and waterfowl for $500. Totally unrealistic.

Go the semi route, at least you will be able to find something good.

Running steel thru the older non choke tubed non steel rated imported Daly's(Miroku) Ithaca's(SKB) even if the chokes have been opened up is quite risky in that they are soft soldered together, popping ribs and seperating barrels can result. The above mentioned guns can be great for targets and upland birds using lead.
 
plane maker is right o\u can get pricey but like myself you can find a good 12 ga semi for under 500 and be satisfied either duck or skeet. i bought a 12 ga. semi winchester 2400 for 399 straight up no tax. good condition
 
My wife has an IGA condor 20 ga. I'd say it is a good gun for the money ($500 ish, have not checked lately). When she isn't using it I normally take it in preference to my 870 for chasing birds, just because it is so much lighter and feels good to me. But it is what it is. I wouldn't expect this gun to take thousands of rounds of trap, and the trigger leaves a lot to be desired. Might fit your needs, though.

When this finally becomes available here, I might even consider one for the coolness-factor and just to own an O/U... Retails for approx $400 in the U.S.

ruffled that iga condor is that the same conder that stoger makes i looked at that i do believe but might be wrong this one i looked at was a stage coach gun short barrel not really what i was looking for traded a .22 lakefeild bolt for a mossberg 2o ga. bolt with poly choke and vented barrel nice gun no kick
 
Yea I ended up buying a nice Browning White Lightning O/U for a good price new and I was planning to spend 600 tops which is REALLY unrealistic for an O/U. I will be using this O/U for clays and the occasional Geese but I plan to buy an SX3 for my dedicated Waterfowl gun and maybe some clays. Good thing is both guns have interchangeable chokes so I feel I have saved some money :)

Not sure I understand exactly what you are asking, but...

My understanding is that there is a '"condor outback" that is kind of like a coach gun. My wife's gun is just the regular condor, which is available with 26 and 28 inch barrels. Hers is 26''. For a general use gun I'd be inclined to do as you did and stay away from the 20'' barrels on the outback version.

This is a quote from the Blue Book:

you MAY NOT be as bad as you think- my 1100 full choke can take up to no 2 steel on advice from REMINGTON- i have the letter to prove it- moreover, if i do want to go whole hog, i can get a NEW BARREL with screw in chokes for 300, give or take- that's a WHOLE LOT CHEAPER than a new gun- that 1100 is vintage 1975, and i would advise you to WRITE OR E-MAIL your gun's manufacturers and see what they say; you may be pleasantly surprised- unless you WANT a new gun, then all bets are off
