Prefered "Woods Loafing" Rifle

I have to stop thinking about this... :)

I've also started popping the scope off my RA XCR-L in 6.8 SPC and carrying it around and I can't forget my s/s 20" barreled LSI Puma M92 in 454 Casull hold 9 405gr WLNGC's in the mag tube.

Boomer's revolver is in 44 Mag and those are polar bear tracks...

Hey crazy davey that is one fine lookin PCMR, from the pics looks like lots of blue left.
Mine is all original like yours and in pretty good shape and shoots real well but it looks like it has done a bit more "ramblin"

This is it Mdl 94 30-30 and gets the odd hunting day as well.

I envy the authorization to pack a 'short one' that Boomer has:cool:. Generally speaking, that would be a choice of mine. For me, a lot depends on where you're at and what's 'around'. Something relatively short, durable and fairly potent I'd go with my Marlin 1895GS.

And I've made mention of this one previously, for around here on the island, walking old skid roads and river bottem areas. Especially on days that are a little damp and breezy when you could run into a Ruff Grouse or island Blacktail, my combination OU Brno ZH 304 in 7x57R & 12ga.

I've got a Ruger no.1 RSI in 243. Awesome short and compact gun that screams classy! By far my favourite walking gun. Loaded with the GMX rounds she's good for deer or bear.

I took it from the original post that he was not asking what one normally "hunts" with but what gun you might carry on a non-hunting walk in the woods. Scouting, fishing, photography etc.

I usually carry just a camera.

However a few years ago I was out looking for sheds in the spring and took along a little single shot .22 to shoot a rabbit for the stew pot, if I saw one.

I came out of the bush onto a cutline and there was a cougar about 30 yards away looking at me. I was amazed at how just having that little .22 in my hands gave me a sense of security.

Sometimes I have thought it would be handy to have a Ruger carbine in .44 mag. for a "Woods Loafing" rifle. Then I would think if one is going to carry something so big it may as well be in a bigger cartridge. But then it would be a Whole Lot bigger and reassuring than that little .22 single shot.

My "wandering" guns would likely be one of the two pictured:

Top one is a 22/20ga. that has been my wandering gun for over 40 years.
Bottom one is nice old .32 Special that has been my deer rifle for the past few years.

Hmm: two choices
Pre-upland game bird season: No question, my Henry 17HMR Lever w/scope. Whacks gophers at 250 yds or 25 yds. Weighs next to nothing, and looks cool.

Upland game bird season: Clearly, my 28 gauge Rem. 1100. Shoots like pointing a finger, and weighs next to nothing. And it looks cool now that I've laid some gold into the engraving.

I've got a well worn rem 742 in 30-06 topped with a decent scope that I got on a trade. Despite it's rough finish, it's a good, reliable rifle, and I've developed some very snappy loads for it using RL-17. Great gun for that sort of thing, as it's fairly light and handy, fine for anything out to 300 - 400 yards, and I can't possibly make it look any worse than it is.
