ok i was thinking about this long and hard and if i can carry a knife open on my belt what about a antique classed handgun

is there anything on this section 90 says concealed but what about open carry am i :nest: here or what

Provided you mean carrying it around on the street ect, Short Answer NO, it would likely end badly for you and sure wouldnt help our cause.

Treat as you would a non restricted firearm and your ok.

so carrying in the brush would be ok for say protection from bears, cougar, wolfs, ect

Yes you can open carry them in the bush you are "target shooting" with it. Carry a copy of the Regs on antiques with you and an FRT print out or an Antique Status Letter, you should be good to go.

But if you have to use your .44 to wack a bear a few times then so be it right.

The antique status of the revolver would get you out of only one of the charges you would get for carrying it anywhere but in a place where you can shoot it.

Think of it as holding a running chainsaw and screaming. It's not illegal by itself, but there are charges that can be laid if you do it in a mall.

I had this discussion in the past with friends of mine. Now maybe there are people more up on the laws than I, but as an ex military cop, let me name a few charges right off the top of my head; creating a disturbance and/or public mischief. So what happens then? You're arrested and the firearm is seized as evidence. Not to mention the media frenzy when the fact that you can own and carry antique arms without a license may cause enough public outcry to make the politicians enact laws to restrict those too. Legal? Hell yes!!! Smart? Hell no!!!

as you can see from my last post i was talking wood's carry of a antique pistol
if your carrying it where you can shoot non restricted rifles and shotguns you sould be in the clear i guess id carry the rcmp letter with it or atleast a copy

In Essex County, Ontario? "Bears, cougar, wolfs" are threats there?

It would be a really, really good idea to be very, very circumspect, if you are going to go armed in public with an antique pistol.

well wolfs and cougars are yes we now have cougars here becuse of the ontario gov tought it would be a good idea to release cougars to help with the huge deer population in southern ontario(cant hunt them but if one come within 10 yards of me you bet im going to shoot it)

and where did i say public in the last 2 post becuse if you some where that you can shoot a rifle or shotgun your far from public id like to be able

OK, you are going to be protecting yourself from these critters in private, not out in public where you might encounter other people, who just might drop a dime on someone carrying a holstered pistol.

The Ontario Government released cougars in Southern Ontario to control the deer population? Really?

Very bad idea camerl2009. Best forget it. You could see yourself in a world of trouble and affect many other people as well.

You're not in Northern BC.

DNA evidence has confirmed that cougars are present in Ontario. Cougars are endangered in Ontario, and probably never existed in large numbers. There has never been an organized release program. Check the Ontario Puma Foundation website.

The fact that they remained hidden for so long suggests they're pretty good at hiding and stalking. Good luck seeing it before it sees you.

If you really need a handgun to protect yourself in the wilderness from cougars, bears and sasquatch you should get a modern high-power handgun and the appropriate license. And of course, years of training, nerves of steel and reflexes like a mousetrap.

Or learn something about how to avoid and discourage predators. An American study on animal attacks in the Rockies suggests that predator attacks are more likely to be fatal if the human has a firearm versus if the human is unarmed...

Somehow I think that telling an OPP officer that the antique revolver being carried is for protection against these critters is going to make for a very interesting experience.

The short answer is, if you're likely to run into conflict with anyone over it (hikers, fudds, hippies, city folk etc) don't do it. You'll get raked over the coals and antiques in general will suffer.

There's another thread that involved this a few days ago.

So in Calgary we have a group called Guns of the Golden West, they do reneactments and stage shootouts. The guy I talked to had a an old .41 Colt, antique and he wore it no problem and participated in a staged shootout at Olympic Plaza. I believe all the reecators were using antqiues. Plenty of police around.

LOL there you have it.
some worry while others do it openly and have no problems.
I have heard of this before with reneactments useing antiques with black powder blanks for smoke and effect.

I only shoot mine where its legal to do so.

Our Canadian Restricted Firearms Safety Course manual - 2008 - appendix B refers to antique firearms. You don't need a registration cert. or a firearms license, but it says"antique firearms owners must comply with the requirements found in Storage, Display, Transportation and Handling of Firearms by Individuals Regulations". Source: Sec 84, Part III of the Criminal Code, Paragraph 117(h), Firearms Act.

I think an ATT and ATC would be required for an antique handgun, as well as double locked, etc. until it is in an area approved for the ATC. I could be wrong as I don't have the Act in front of me. I certainly wouldn't feel comfortable taking one out of the house otherwise. If anyone comments on this post I would appreciate a PM from them alerting me. I would like to see the comment. Thanks!
