Hi,

Ive got a really nice, all matching Savage No.4 Mk. 1/3 Enfield. FTR'd at Fazarkerly in 1953. Im looking to find out what the date of manufacture on this gun is. Can't seem to find any date markings anywhere on it.

Thanks

Savage production

A rifle with 0C03### would be first year of production, 1941. Production started in July, 1941 so this rifle is an early one, and is within the first 4,000 made.
.

Thanks buffdog!

Any idea on production numbers for 1941 Savage enfields? or ideas on the number of mk.1's converted to 1/3's? Is this a particularly uncommon rifle, being a first year production and converted into a Mk.1/3?

Thanks

So is it a '41 or '44 ? The serial number has 5 digits after the 0C, but the next digits are 03###, so wouldnt this be under 4000 as far as production goes? Seems like this would have been early in production.

0C03000 would be the 1,003,000th rifle made. 0C3000 would be the the thousandth. 3C3000 would be number 33000. After 99C9999 (nine hundred and ninety nine thousand, nine hundred and ninety nine rifles) the odometer rolled over and they went to the 0 prefix with five digits.

Correction

A Savage with 0C plus five digits would be 1944 production. 0C with 4 digits would be 1941.

 :agree:

TIRIAQ is correct on the date.

I was at a friends computer when I made that post, and checked my reference books when I got home just now.

Oh, well. At 70 years old, I guess that Alzheimers might be sneaking up on me. Hope my ### life doesn't go all to hell too!

If you want to date one of these old birds with a chance of getting lucky, I suggest going out for "bangers & chips" followed by a cozy evening in front of the "tele" watching a re-run of either "The Queen" or Coronation Street.

It would be worth a close look at the muzzle before going too far because quite a few of them have bad teeth and terrible breath as well (smells like cordite). Pay careful attention to the bedding....and for God's sake wear protection!:p;)

haha I was waiting for someone to make a "dating" joke out of this thread! :D

but no worries, this one is a beaut! Very well put together ;)
