Well, I tried my Burris FastFireII out on the Black special today hoping I would be able to co-witness the irons. WRONG, it mounted in such a bad position, I couldn't clearly use the red dot cause it wasn't high enough, and I couldn't see irons through it either, the base was to high.

I am considering trying out a Bushnell TRS-25 again hoping for the ability to co witness the irons. Does anyone know if this works?

I am strongly leaning towards some kind of an optic with around 1-4x magnification, preferably with .223 bullet drop compensation and a luminous reticil of sorts. Does anyone have any ideas. Preferably under 500 bux

The Aimpoint Micro with its factory mount (or the clones I would assume have a similar profile) will give a lower 3rd co-witness with the B&T mounts.

Now the unfortunate part about the hooded front sight post, is that the front hood WILL obstruct your view. This was the same exact problem with my USC/UMP conversion.

I ended up taking off the front sight hood, so its just a front post and it works MUCH better when using the sight. I know the Swiss rifles have the front sight hood as removable, maybe you can ask TSE if they have the fold-down front sight assembly?


IMHO the "Classic" series with irons are not good optics mounting platforms, unless you want to go with a slightly higher QR mount that puts it above the fixed iron sights, and the QR will allow you to remove it to use the irons in an emergency.

What about a TRS-25, and what do you mean by a 3rd co witness? also do you think the front hood getting in the way would be so obtrusive as to not be able to use it? or a personnel preference kinds thing?

Also I have a kyle precision rail, is it the same size and profile as a B&T Rail
 
If your set on getting a compact red dot go for the Vortex SPARC its the best deal out there hands down... its only $219 and makes the TRS25 look like dog poo.. personally i would go for some sort of 4X optic on a full size swiss.. for a budget of $500 go for a Vortex Viper PST 1-4x24 EBR MOA or for a few hundred less theres the millet DMS.. also NEA is releasing a new top rail in a week that will co witness with a Aimpoint micro , Vortex SPARC ect. there is a thread on it do a search.

a lower third co-witnes is where you iron sights line up in the bottom third of your sight ( if you cut the screen horzontally into 3 equal sections) whereas an absolute co witness is where the iron sights line up right in the middle. the front hood may not bother you at all, i found the hood on my USC pretty irritating since the top of the hood was in the middle of the optic screen. you can always try it out and see how you like it :p with diopter sights like HK 416 sights, i actually like an absolute co witness a little more, but you'de need the new NEA rail for that with an aimpoint micro. the vortex SPARC is a pretty good micro clone, but i dont know if its the same mounting platform as the micro T1.

i think the kyle rail is the same height as the b&t one, but not 100% sure. just seeing pics it looks to be within a MM of the same if not exact!

the swiss guns are definitely well suited for optics, but the rear sight drum makes you mount stuff up pretty high, which is why i'd get a "target" model if i wanted to put optics on, but again thats just my opinion :) my buddy has the black special and a leupold 2.5-8 on it with the cheek piece, and he seems to really like it!
 
I would go with a short do type optic on your rifle, on the low end i have read good reviews on the falcon menace 1.5x5 and the millet DMS, mid range the vortex PST, high end leupold, shmidt and bender, night force....
 
I have a Nightforce in a Larue SPR & it is great...I have a TA31 as well which obviously has it's merits but the Nightforce 1X4 works perfect for me. I traded my Black special flat top for a whole different thing (M1A) but I still use the Nightforce on the Classic green with a KPA rail......this way I have the full size Iron sight option which I love for close range plinking!

Yup, as already mentioned, they do have a Stanag type mounting base. However ARMS has a Stanag to Picurweenie conversion base, as seen on the scope on the left. I believe it is the #18A. I got it through Wolverine. That's the one that's on the Sig rifle. Undo the 2 screws, remove HK mount, screw on ARMS mount. Simple. I'm sure the other manufacturers, ie. American Defense, Larue, etc have the same thing. I ain't particularly fond of ARMS product, but they were the only ones available at the time.

The one on the left has the reticule illumination rheostat installed. I bought 2 of them for both scopes, however, they are junky and very flimsy. They were the only ones I could find, so they'll have to do until something better comes along. They work and are proper for these scopes by variably illuminating the reticule red, but are basically crap.

Both scopes came in the green cases originally with the HK mount. Inside there is a filter. I think it's just a polarizing type filter. Also has a small cleaning kit.

Hensoldt scopes

Hensoldt scopes can be purchased on Ebay, depending on condition usually $495-$695 range from VG to brand new from two German military surplus dealers one I believe is called Army Specials in Franconia Germany the other dealer seems to be another similar outlet of this surplus store located in another German city I have ordered two and received both in beautiful barely used exellent + condition , all complete with HK mount and case plus tools/pouch minus the illuminators. I received both within 10 days and paid no GST as these are VAT included items. Very nice scopes well worth the coin and both 4X power, there is an older model and a newer model. The dealer in Franconia gave exellent service with Teutonic prescision. gladius 2.
