Well so much for antique handguns are not powerfull enough for defensive purposes in the bush. :dancingbanana: Oh ya Baby this puppy would kill 3 donkeys lined up no problems.
The case in the picture is a 45 70 which the gun can almost chamber with a .454 SWC Bullets seated deeper in the case so it crimps over the last shoulder.
Supper tough guns theses 1870 gassers the orignal cartridge is the werndle carbine cartridge.
But with a whisker of reaming she will chamber a 45 70 case tho not a factory round as a factory 45 70 the bullet sticks out the front of the cylinder.
This is a masive handgun im sure the Russians and others used theses in siberia and places when they explored the north country.
Im gona clean this one up to like new.
Its 6 shooter 2 inch long supper strong heavy cylinder. this one has a ex bore and will fire the .454 bullets Keith type.
I will play with TB loads to start with. :)

I know about the week points in some of the gassers mine is a newer steel frame one not the soft iron ones.
Theres a Big center pin that the barrel screws onto and the screw at the bottom holds it together as well. Its pretty strong but im gona be carefull and use Trail boss to start with. maby some 2400 loads to i will see as i go along.
This is the bigest model you can get that shoots the werndel carbine round.

Nice firearm Dingus.

According to the one source I found it seems like the original round ballistics called for a 300 grain bullet travelling around 700ft/sec. The open framed Gasser handgun rounds were apparently loaded much milder than the same dimensional round that was also used in the single shot Werndl Carbine of the period. A full round house 40 grain blackpowder colt 45 round of the period was still considered the superior to 11mm Montenegrin. It probably would not take more than 30 grain of blackpowder or 12-15 grain of 4198 to match original ballistics.

Maybe somewhat black bear and cougar defense capable, but I'd stay away from grizzlys Dingus. But I guess at nearly 3lbs the handgun itself would make a formidible projectile. :)

Ya i wont mess with no griz with any antiques.
Theres alot of different rounds for theses this one is so close to 45 70 in gona use 45 70 brass.
Im gona try some 800 Fps TB loads in this gun as i can see it can handle that.

The Thread was more of a joke about the size of the handgun heck i could kill a cougar by crushing its skull with this gun LOL ;)

7.62x54 russian brass shorten to the right length works perfectly and is thin enough that you don't need to in side neck ream and functions without having to change the pistol

Is that that steel crap i see by the bucket full at the range ?
My buddy was telling me about that 7.62 x 54
Will 308 Nato cases work to ?

I was thinking just a light swirl with a 45 70 reamer then i can use full 45 70 cases which are stronger and super thick walled.

I was looking closer at the way this thing is built and its Strong the center cylinder pin goes into that back part thats 3/4s wide and 3/4 deep of solid good quality steel then down into the grip frame. that center pin can withstand alot of abuse.
The cylinder chamber wall is like .120 thick at the back with 0 stop notch cut outs norm,al cylinder is about half that thickness with stop notch cutouts.
The fit of the barrel as it screws on is a perfect fit as it swings into place like a M&H has.
Im impressed i always thought theses would be rough crappy guns thats not the case. the action is even a bigger surprise. perfect trigger and the DA is ex and smooth.
Also the cylinder spins at the loading notch smooth as any SAA colt with the click click click as it whrils past the hand.
Im gona keep and play with this gun.
