I'm not sure why but I'm interested in picking up a single shot bolt action rifle...
I own(ed) .22lr semi's, bolts, levers, all capable of holding and shooting many rounds quickly.
I'm looking to slow things down a bit and getting back to the basics.

So, my question is which .22lr fits the following bill: (New or minty Used)
1. single shot
2. bolt action
3. full-size "classic" wood stock
4. good iron sights

Hopefully I can get some answers before I post on the EE.

Thanks

Look for a CZ ZKM468. Single shot and about as nice as you will find unless you go up into the Annies. I have a CZ452 which I adore but my fave single is not a bolt. Its a BSA Martini Model 12 takedown. Stunningly accurate with peeps and gobs of fun to shoot. Just something about that quirky Matini action that keeps ya grinning. Sure I love my CZ and my 9422 and my Fieldmaster pump and my Henry Golden Boy but I shoot the Martini cuz its both fun and accurate as all get out. Considering its an 80yr old target rifle especially. This one I shoot for fun, always..And its weird. :)

I like the Cooey 39 but the fore-stock seems a little short.
The CZ ZKM468 may be exactly what I'm looking for provided one can be found in VG condition(at a fair price).
I've read good things about the Annie's but can't get past the funky looking stock on most of their models.

Not all Cooey 39 stocks are the same and, can be interchanged with 75 and, 82's...Mine were both of the "slender" variety but there are "big bellied" ones...(Not sure if a 'smith would use those terms)

Local shop has a Naaco (North American Arms Company...I think made in GTA!) Grizzly singleshot. It lines up nice but, I've never shot it. There was a thread here floating around about them to, not too long ago.

Dunno if it's grooved but, will be popping in there this week. Another good bit of Canadiana with a fine reputation.

If you want to keep with a bit of Canadian history I would look for a nice Cooey model 78target gun with the peep sight. A real nice one will be about $150.00 (unless you are lucky to find one cheaper). Ones in rough shape can be had for less. They are pretty good shooters and you get a nice walnut stock.

Thanks for the info everyone! I had no idea that a "simple" single-shot could be so sophisticated:eek: "falling blocks", "peep-sights", "big-bellied"...looks like I'm going to have some fun looking for one to fit my bill!
Camster, let me know what you find out about the Naaco Grizzly. Sounds interesting.

N'er made it in today, sorry...will try again on Thursday. I think it had a 99.00 pricetag on it and, looked good. Just can't recall if it has grooves for a scope. The same smith has a .32Spec '94 for 265.00...pretty tough to beat.

Will PM you with info as soon as I can. I'd post his particulars but, not only is he not a site sponsor...dunno if he wants to be listed on a site called "nutz".

i) Falling block is a type of action...oddly enough, I don't think it's listed as part of th PAL course...
ii) For differences in Cooey stock, see pics below
iii) a "Peep" sight is shown on the 2nd from bottom pic (light background not red)

75rt.jpg

My '75...possibly most accurate rifle in the safe. Older styled stock and not "big bellied" but a nice, slender form.

75-1.jpg

Newer Cooey 75 with the belly on it's stock (probably makes more sense now)
PIcture provided by a fellow CGN'er but, sadly, I can't recall which. (Winnipeg Toymaker? Cowboy? Sorry...for all I've learned here, a name shouldn't be too hard!)

82regularstock-1.jpg

This is a model 82...military trainer with a belly stock and, Peep sights. Peep sights are basically a ring(aperture) to look through. Supposed to loan itself to accuracy..this also looks like a model 78 (a 75 with peep sights)

82fullstock-1.jpg

Another 82 in it's military trainer form (I've never seen one of these in real life...)

Again, credit to the photographer as soon as I find them...the red blanket is mine, the rest from fellow CGN'er.
Essentially, these are all the same rifle. Not shown is a 39 (same as 75 but, much shorter)

Camster, thanks for taking the time to post the great pics!
I've been searching the net and came up with lots of options.
I'll be keeping a close eye on the EE for a full-sized "classic" single-shot with a good set of solid irons. Just wished I was more educated on these fine rifles so I'll know when I'm bidding on a fair deal.

The ZKM468 has a feature only a few single shot rifles have. There is a cradle that is moved with the bolt to hold the ass end of the boolit. Just set the nose in the chamber and drop the cartridge on the cradle and it feeds it for you. I picked one up here in town for $135 in really nice shape. Too bad you are not local as there is a huge gun show in Kamloops in a week and a half. Still for simplicity I much prefer my falling Martini action. Google BSA Martini. Very strong accurate mechs. FYI I had a Cooey 39 and absolutely hated it. Sure they are cheap and I feel they should be. Not a fan at all. I know there are some figure its manna from heaven but lost on me. Too many other choices. Still as long as it shoots be happy. The Winchester single shots in the 60 series are much nicer and one even had that feed cradle in it. Nice little guns.

bogie, the BSA is too foreign looking for me;)
How do you like the ZKM468? How are the irons and in your opinion does it feel like a adult rifle? (ie. size/weight)
Visually it looks good to me and I can't believe they can be had for that price! If I could find a mint one....:)

The ZKM is an adult sized single shot rifle and a delight to shoot. All the stuff that makes a 39 awkward is gone. Accurate and very civilized with nice lines.
For the price its pretty much untouchable. I lucked out as there was a fella right behind me planning to take it if I didnt. This rifle has a following so if you are fortunate enough to find one grab it. I bought it for my wife but ladies sometimes just dont like bolt action. That was the day my Winchester 9422 became hers. Seems the ladies like levers. Being lefthanded it was never going to be mine anyways as I have its big brother the CZ452 leftie. Should have got one many years ago. At 100m it will chew a bull out all day long. Not the 22s I remember in my youth. As for the Martini-I got a little bored with bolts a while ago and looked for something a little weird to shoot. Ask anybody in competition and they have run up against one likely on a regular basis. They shoot really good right out of the box even very old. Check out Epps. Seems to me I saw one there recently.

....does this mean yours will be on the EE anytime soon?;)

Simple single-shot can be as sophisticated as much money you have :)
See some examples here: http://www.targettalk.org/viewtopic.php?t=27383

Price easily exceeds 5K..

Geez and I thought the BSA Martini International Mk III was over the top. What was I thinking?? Still Anschutz does have a superb rep.
