I need a few suggestions and tips from those that have replaced their plastic Norinco/Poly M305 stock with a Boyds M1A stock. I have sourced most of the parts from Brownells, but still missing the buttplate assembly.

Also, when I dropped in the receiver into the Boyds, I noticed that I will have to make some other adjustments. Should the receiver be tight with the front ferrul or tight to the back of the stock?

Suggestions and advice please.

If your not sure what to do, get a gunsmith to help do this, also look at

I tried a boyds stock and my rifle went kaboom.

Back on the black plastic stock.

I hope it works for you.

I just picked up a Boyds stock a few weeks ago and I am in the process of extensive fitting. It was supposed to be a drop in stock, but not even close. You are not alone on getting shafted by a drop in quality control standards. Once I lock the trigger assembly into place the rifle is too long at the front ferrul. Can't say I really trust it.

Make sure that you install the stock liner before you try fitting the receiver and trigger assembly.

I sent back a boyds stock. It had the holes for the gas vent and the sling mounting pad in the wrong place. Also a big gouge in the forend and the right side reciever ledge was not milled far enough back. They said the Chineese stocks are not made to proper specs. They make them to springfield armoury specs.

Mine was sold as drop in as well, i don't blame the seller as it was probably a good fit for his rifle, but for mine it was a disaster, now I have a very nice stock but cant use it, i will not chance it again unless a gunsmith can look at it for me.

Really seems hit or miss. I've decided that I probably can't use mine because when everything is installed the stock is too short at the front. Leaves an ugly gap and it worries me that the gun isn't properly supported. Just wasted 100 bucks. Back to the poly stock until I can save up enough money for a M14 Doc CQB.

How large of a gap? M14s should have some gap there

The front band just catches the ferrule. On the poly stock the front band seats all the way on the ferrule without a gap in between. Going on memory I'll say at least a 1/8 gap.

Mine is 1/16 but 1/8 is not too bad "if its to close it will mess up your accuracy"

When I dropped in my Norc receiver I noticed that I will likely need to shave a bit off the top right hand side to make it sit flush. However, I am worried that the space between the ferrul and barrel band is too much. If I push the receiver all the forward, there is nearly a 1/4 inch gap. Can this be salvaged?

Did you put your stock liner in ?????

Putting the stock liner in is necessary for the gun to sit where it should in the stock. Having said that, my stock is still too short at the front. It might still work, but it looks bad. I will need an over sized ferrule to make up the difference.
Here is a pic of my stock as it came from Boyds.

i just received mine today!. I had about an hour of fitting to do, but now everything is perfect, and I even tested the trigger for safety in the new stock.

I have not finished it yet, not even sanded.

That stock cost me 35$ !!! and the fitting is now perfect. however, I am missing the buttplate, my norinco is no where near to fit correctly. Aslo, I wonder if I have to have a front ferrule. ?

Anyway, i<m sure it will look great once i put on the tung and teck oil.

You got lucky. 35$ is a great deal!

I left a honest review on Boyds detailing all the issues with my stock, and wouldn't you know it, my review disappeared...

In the end, the length of the stock is the only thing that I can't really change. Had it not been for that last issue, I think that I would have overcome my disappointment.

Starting at the rear of the stock, the butt plate wouldn't seat properly because there was too much wood sticking out. The bottom screw hole is angled slightly so that when I try to install the sling loop the threads bind. The hole was also too shallow.

The receiver wouldn't seat properly, see pic above. The hand guard on the left side was also too tight against the stock. The stock is too short at the front.

The inside was an ugly mess. There are about half a dozen small black knots in the wood and the finish had a number of rough spots and tooling marks.

On the plus side, it feels way better then the poly stock...for what it's worth.
