What would it headspace on?

sounds like a pita......may as well use .458 bullets and while you are it use an existing design. (450 marlin or 45-70 come to mind)

I was wondering the same thing!!
The case itself is not nearly thick enough to headspace like a .45ACP.
Worthless and possibly VERY costly experiment IMO!!

The 4450 has a belt and the 45/70 has a rim, the '06 has neither!!
I'm all for wildcats and have messed with some useless ones, but this idea sounds to risky.....

right, from the 06' case all you could do is neck down enough to get somekind of a shoulder to headspace on.....maybe .429 and I think 416 has been done. Hell Im pretty sure anything doable to 06 case has already been done.
"...Base is .471 I believe..." .470", close enough, but that doesn't matter. The finished case mouth diameter does. That won't be .470".
Shoulder diameter of the .30-06 is .436". Cutting the case at the shoulder vs blowing the neck and shoulder out would give you a case that's a 269 thou shorter, rimless, .444 Marlin with a 41 thou smaller case head diameter. And/or a 650 thou longer .44 Auto-Mag.
You'd still have to have the reloading experience to develope a safe load.

After a quick check I dont' think anything bigger than the 400 Whelen / 411 hawk has been successfully done . Even that one had supposed headspace issues with a shoulder that small.

You would want a little bit of taper to it, to make it feed easier.
Then you would want a rim for it to headspace off.
Minus the thickness of the brass,it works out to about .429.
Now you have a .444 Marlin, and yes, its works really well.

If your interested in wildcats track down P O Ackleys books. Lots of good reading, some really useless combos as well. Lots of modern stuff coming out as well, for every new cartridge somebody blows it out or necks it down.
