How good were Browning Auto 5`s

Not sure what you mean by *were*?
They are a fabulous semi and have a great following.
Keep'em clean and lubed and pound away.
Set the rings for ammo used and they just work.
Three here and all are keepers.
Sounds as though you need to experience one or two................

I have one and want more. In fact if I could afford to collect any type of firearm it would be Browning A5 shotguns over anything else.

Designed in 1898, patented in 1900 and produced until 1998, try to name any other shotgun with those credentials.

I need at least a Mag 12 and a 20 gauge.

Mine fits me like a glove and I hit with it.

I have a Browning Gold too and though I love shooting it, it doesn't fit me right and I miss more with it.

To me you either liked them or hated them. I have owned a few over the years and they work fine. They didnot fit me well so I ended up selling them and used other semi's .
Better made than a 1100 by leaps and bounds, better made than a superx1 or a early browning gold. Not even close.
If it fits you and you like it they will work well for you.

I'm one of the later. Can't stand the Auto 5 and reserve a special place for the Sweet Sixteen as the least dersirable combination of gun and guage.

Like most Browing designs it is needlessly complex. The Auto 5 has a tendency to crack forends and replacing a stock isn't as simple as most other shotguns. And they handle like a stump.

In it's day it might have been a step forward but it's day is long, long past.

I've had an A5 20 ga Magnum since 1967. Thousands of rounds have gone through it and it still functions perfectly.
Just do what Kamlooky says and they will not let you down.

In its day the Browning Auto 5 was leaps ahead of all the other autos. What helped the auto 5 was that til the time of retirement all the competition was unreliable. Lucky the auto 5 retired. The Browning gold and silver, the Winchester Super X series, the Beretta 300 series and the Benelli inertia guns are all superior as a reliable auto. The A-5's time is past. I am a little sad about that but there is a lot of stuff out there that keeps me moving forward.

Best built, most reliable auto-loading shotgun ever built. Anyone who says different is full of BS. May not handle like those new tupperware crap that's around but once you get a feel for them you will not go back.

I guess I am full of B.S. I would take a Win. SX-1 above an A5 any day of the Week.
