First leap into the red: Shot an SKS today and have some questions...

Well, I'm normally a black-shotgun guy. I like the kick, I like the power it offers.

I shot my buddy's Marstar Special. I'm not sure which kind of SKS it is - it has a wood stock and a spike bayonet.

Needless to say, I'm intrigued - especially given the price of one of these rifles...

A few questions to those owners...

-I've heard that 7.62x39 will soon no longer be available in Canada.. any truth in that statement?

-Not looking for a 'target' rifle, but how difficult is it to get a scope mounted on an SKS?
 
LOL IV HEARD SO MANY TIMES OVER THE LAST 15 YEARS OHHH THESE ARE THE LAST SHIPMENT NO MORE SKS EVER.... no more ammo.

just buy one everyone should own one, they are cheap hardy and fun...you want ammo stock up...

to scope it get a side mount either choate or a russian type.... just type sks scope into a google image search...voila

cheap gun big fun buy one and a case of ammo and a bottle of windex. have a great time with the most fun for the money gun ever.
 
It's a 22 for big kids with a practical side you can hunt medium game. It's accurate enough and plenty of fun. It's the gun everyone should own.
 
You can get a scope mount that replaces the back sight and put an LER scope on it, that is easy.

So, besides the sarcasm, there's no indication that ammo will be in short supply?

I'm thinking of getting one of these things - anyone know of a brick and mortar store in and around Brantford, Hamilton or the GTA? (ontario)

Its a good plan to buy as many crate's of x39 you can afford. the Gf or I try to get a crate every few months..cuz well, its dirt cheep. Also a good idea to use site sponsors such as SFRC and slowly buy up some comercial brass cased soft point. When the ammo is in stock there is lots of it, but there is always a wait when it runs out. X39 will never vanish tho, its like .30-06 and 45-70, it has stood the test of time and is a popular round.

Is an SKS-D as dependable as an SKS?

I like the idea of detachable mags.
 
No bolt hold-open on the SKS-D and AK mags are not cheap in Canada. And they cost two and a half times what a regular SKS does. For that kind of money spend a little more and get a VZ.

If you plan to buy an SKS and throw a bunch of money at it ... Just get a CZ It will cost almost the same....

I picked up my first SKS back about 1989 or 90. I've been hearing that rumor since. And its true! The shipment of rifles sells out and then there are no more. Then another shipment of rifles and ammo comes in. Then it runs out, then theres more.....

There has been enough rifles sold in Canada that they will never go away. Commercial ammo has a good hold on its piece of the market, and surplus ammo... well its surplus. Buy it when you can and stock up.

First rifle I bought when I got my PAL was an SKS from Al Simmons' gun shop in Hamilton.
 
I was just in Hamilton today!

I'll give them a call tomorrow and see what I can work out.

Points noted on the SKS-D... makes sense to spend a little more and get the 858. I'll start with an SKS and if I like the Red Rifles... I might invest.
 
I customized mine a fair bit and I'm still in for under 500$(including the price of the gun) I love my SKS
 
Might get one myself.... :)

Used to own over 10, now down to two. A Russian and a Yugo. Might get a Chinese one but holding back a bit. I also used to trick mine out but I got away from that and prefer them plain.

Forget the detachable mags. You can reload faster with the stripper clips.
