Title says it all. My local gun shop has some Maverick slug gun for $290, is this any good or should I save money for something else. I would use it only for deer, am willing to buy bolt action slug guns.
I remember reading in gun tests almost 10 years ago that they called Brownings BPS slug gun the best pump action slug gun, is this still true?

Thank you.

I would be willing to bet that the Browning A bolt slug gun will be very good however there are only 2 that I really like. One is my Beretta ES100 pintail slug gun. Shoots under 2" at 100 with Winchester Supreme 385 Partitions. The other one i have is a Savage 210 slug warrior and it's a real tack driver as well but the scope mount causes it to have trouble extracting sometimes....

A Maverick Model 88 is a Mossberg. Literally a Mossberg Model 500. A Mossberg M500 is as good as a Rem 870. It'll do nicely. If you opt for the Maverick, Mossberg M500 barrels and choke tubes will fit.
"...Brownings BPS slug gun the best..." Best for the money. The money is double and more than what the shop(Shooter's Choice?) wants for the Maverick.

Yes my local shop is shooter's choice, other one is gun centre. I don't like either one as they are expensive. Buying this Maverick is not a bad choice?

Ithaca Deerslayer series.

slug2001.jpg

All shots @100 yards from a bench, with iron sights. Winchester 2 3/4 foster slugs.
The first slug up top and right, was before I adjusted the rear sight.
The middle bunch are after the adjustment.
Those two on the left are when the action stockbolt became loose. I was befuddled on the first shot, but I felt the gun 'irk' a bit on the second shot.

Hm yes I agree with mosinmaster, Ithaca by far......

PS: With this shotgun's near twin I plugged very very dead a wild boar @75 yards using the same set up and a single brenneke slug.
I am a big fan of Ithaca M37s and thier smoothbore slug tossing barrels.

My Mossberg 930 semi using handloaded lyman slugs with the rifled barrel.

Got my first bear with it and there is very little recoil. Flipped the little bugger right over.

Ithaca 37 has a long standing rep as a good smooth bore slugger. Their rifled ones are even better. I think their advantage comes from the barrel being semi-threaded onto the receiver.

Keep in mind this was with a dismountable M87 fully rifled 20 inch, 20 gauge barrel on an M37 featherweight receiver. Again iron sights.
This experiment was brief due to cost of sabotted ammunition. The projectiles are .452 diameter @1900 FPS.
Recoil was quite something, I bought a Limb Saver slip on recoil pad, just for this high kicker.
IMHO, even the 12 gauge shotguns seemingly recoiled less.

What about an 870 with fully rifled cantilever bbl?

I was going to suggest the same. My cantilever barreled 870 has a 1x28 Bushnell Trophy red/green dot scope mounted on it. At 50 metres, I'm hitting sub 2 inch with quality sabot slugs! I just love it. Keep it oiled at it will give you years of service.
