I have a Remington 870 3 " Magnum with an extra 3" barrel and also have a 2 3/4" 870. I was wondering if I can use the extra 3" barrel that I have on the 2 3/4" gun and shoot 3" magnum out of it. I think the size of the ejection port on both guns are the same size. Is the receiver and it's components made stronger on the 3" magnum gun to handle the 3" magnum cartridges?

The only difference, besides the barrel, is the ejector. The ejector for 3" guns sits farther back in the receiver to allow the longer shells to clear the port. It shoudn't be too expensive to change out the ejector if you don't mind the new rivets showing on the receiver. It is sometimes possible to reuse the old rivets.

Thanks for the reply. I didn't look at the ejectors that closely but will take a better look and compare it. I do have some empty 3" casings in the basement and might try swapping out the barrels and put one of the casing in to see if it will actually eject or get stuck. Don't really want to modify the 2 3/4" 870. I was just wondering if I can actually put the 3" barrel in the gun and actually put it to use.

I did it for one season. I think I only put a few 3" through it, but I don't remember having ejecting issues. It has been advised against here many times. You can get a 3" Wingmaster w/ rib for $300 if you look enough.
Best of luck

Absolutely. My 870 was built as a 2-3/4" gun and it has a 3" barrel on it right now. I haven't actually tried shooting 3" shells out of it, though.

First off why do you want to use the extra 3" barrel on the 2 3/4" receiver, is it tubed for using steel shot. What is the objective to the madness LOL. 2 3/4" will work just as well as 3" shells. I my self don't see the need for 3" shells, when I have done just fine with 2 3/4" steel on geese and ducks

I agree. However its the same old 3" versus 3.5" argument. There will be dudes arguing that 4" is necessary some time in the future. :D Some people enjoy bruised shoulders and big egos.

One reason why I want to change out the barrel is because the 2 3/4" gun has a 26" barrel and the spare 3" barrel is 30". Don't plan on shooting many or if any 3" shells out of it, but as per my original post, just wondering if it can be done. The other reason is that this spare barrel is brand new and I got it for free and it just sit's in the gun safe.

You can put a barrel with a 3" chamber on an 870 built with a 2 3/4" receiver. I have done it. You can fire a 3" shell in it too. You have a single shot though...because the empty shell does not eject...the port is too small and ejector is in the wrong place.
