Hi all!

I need your help to choose either for a green laser or flashlight to be installed on a Smith & Wesson MP 40.

I want to avoid toys brands such as NC Star.

Thanks for your help!

If you want it just for ####s and gigles get whatever you feel like. Unless you are military/LEO I think you will find it completely useless to you. I'm not saying you're wasting your time/money, but my opinion is that they are just a gimick. In the event you have an intrudor in your home and have to defend yourself, that is the only use i could see for them. You would be better off (IMO) to just get a nice handheld flashlight. Laser sights don't work nearly as well as they do on tv/movies (in my experience with them) and i feel that a flashlight on your gun gives the bad gun something to aim for in a pitch black room.

I know this isn't what you asked for and i'm not trying to talk you out of buying one. I just simply don't see a real use for them other to say "my gun has a laaaaaazer". And if that's what you're going for go nuts. It's your gun and your money.

Again people please don't bash me, I'm not trying to tell the OP that he'd be stupid to buy one. I'm just trying to share my experience with them so that he can make an informed decision as to weather or not he really needs one.

OP-I think you'd be better off with night sights on your gun. And a flashlight in your hand.

Blaxun, thanks for the suggestion.

NDB86, What an answer your giving me there.... lol

Seriously, your comment also goes in what I'm also thinking. I'm not sure on what to do.

The fact is that even if a firearm is not a toy, it's a hobby and most of us, including me, are buying stuff just to say we have them. The laser sight goes in that sense.

But what made me think twice about it is something I read in one of the magazine I receive.

The writer is explaining that he was witness of an armed robbery and was able to stop the perpetrator without having to shoot him. The thief saw the red spot on his chest and knew that he was in big trouble and decided to drop his knife.

Knowing that there are more and more Home Invasions in Canada, and that in the next 5 Years the amount is expected to increase significantly, I think that it could be a good idea.

like i say your money your gun so go nuts! i just thought i'd give ya my 2 cents. i've tried quite a few different lights/lasers and none of the firearm mountable ones got my motor running, but if you like them then go nuts.

But I'm allergic to cats...

So in your opinion it's more for the look than anything else for what I can understand.

Thanks all of you guys and gals if any.

if you go to the surefire website and look at the video they have on that page, you can see the arguments they make for it. I'll summarize their points, and give my opinion on them after.

1. durability - you pay for durability. If its a tool you need durability, if its a toy, you're probably not economically spending your money.

2. How well the lazer holds its zero - surefire argues after shooting (may rounds) a lazer can loose its zero. Again, if you're not using your pistol for work, you might want to go with a less expensive model.

3. functionality. **This is the important arguement which i agree with** At night your ability to acquire a target, identify your target, index your sights, and fire off an accurate round are greatly deminished. A lazer light combo can really help with this. The lazer particularly takes away the need to effectively index your sights in a night time situation. Therefore, the lazer allows you greater reaction time when responding to target aquisition and generating your point of aim point of impact target picture.

I think this is the key reason to spend the money on a quality item. I think the money you spend on a higher output light is worth the money.

Number 1, you're going to need a good handlight. Additional to that good handlight, I suggest a SureFire X300 and Crimson Trace Lasergrips, in that order.

Surefire is supposed to be high quality but the lamp just sucks. I've replaced four on mine. It takes nothing more than being dropped about foot over a hard surface and they break. Maybe I've been unlucky but that is not preformance and they are expensive.

Easier said than done, but just don't drop it. However for something that is supposed to be for self defence, that is unacceptable. it has to just work 100% of the time.

This far into the thread an no one has said anything about the (new) OP talking about using a pistol for self defense?
While I do not want to start a legalese type discussion here, IMHO pointing a laser at him and having him run is for the movies (and manufacturer sponsored magazines!).
Based upon the (backwards) Canadian laws, there had better be a darn good reason for pointing that pistol at him in the first place. I'm not calling into question your right to legally defend yourself or intentions, but only hoping to show some of the other side of things.

In all seriousness (and to contribute to the thread), get a reliable flashlight like surefire, fenix, etc. 60 lumens and up, don't get a face melter like 200+ and blind yourself along hallways/white painted rooms, with a lanyard (not firearm mounted) so it can be used for other things.

Keep it next to your bed, so IF (god forbid) things ever do go bump in the night, pointing the flashlight around does not mean you are swinging a pistol around to identify objects/people (in keeping with the first rule of firearm safety).

Don't bother with a laser for a pistol. Get a good light (Surefire), and practice using it under a variety of conditions and on a variety of targets.

Picking up (spotting) a red dot and keeping it steady on a moving target under stress isn't the easiest thing in the world. It's easy when your target is stationary paper.

And before someone says it - Yes, I've used PEQ 4's, 2's, and other weapon mounted IR lasers. Not the same thing, in my opinion.
