A post in another thread got me thinking. Shotguns for hunting have to be plugged to 3 shells (2+1). Why is that? OK...say you justify it for waterfoul/bird hunting. Whatever the argument is thats fine I can live with that, but why for deer hunting. Every other guy in the bush has got 5 rounds in his rifle. Your doing exactly the same hunt. Its not like you are using a superior weapon/tool. If anything you are at a disadvantage using a shotgun, having limited range and accuracy. What do you guys think...am I missing something?

A Conservation Officer told me way back when (before Sabot was on the market). The speed of deer once shot at times the distance of the slug kill range. Therefore the result would be a wounded animal more so then a dead animal. And worse Hail Mary Shoots to bout.

It would be very interesring if someone was to challenge this rule before the courts for big game hunting only. Being a migratory/waterfowl rule, I still don't agree or understand why it is rolled over into big game.
I phoned the Ontario MNR myself for clarification and a possible answer as to why this applies to hunting Deer...

The range of at the time for a slug was at best 70 yds accuracy. So if you shot and missed a deer by the time you get a third shot off that deer will be out of range. So if you were lucky to hit it with a fourth shot the odds are you would wound it as opposed to a kill shot.

Its not a rule, its law in ON via the provincial gov't. Doesnt matter that a similar law applies to Migratory birds federally. You'd lose, easily.
At one point I thought it was only for migratory bird hunting aswell. I completely disagree with this law for big game hunting.
Now I don't want to start this here but I'm gonna say it anyway. Would that be a good law to have challenged if the CPC gets majority?
Lets not start a political thing here though....just food for thought.

What if there is more than one deer?
Perfect example; Last year me and 2 other guys were pushing the bush slowly here in Southern Ontario. As we entered the bush we saw 2 does jump across a clear path and they bolted into the thicker stuff. Anyways we now know there is 2 deer in this bush so we spread out and start moving slowly through it. Long story short I walk up on them and they turn and bolt directly towards my buddy to my right. I here 3 shots, followed by some of the worst crazy noises I have heard in a while. He hit the first deer clean, and it was out, but the second he hit high in the spine, and it was kicking and all over the place. He had to reload to put it out, and even though it only took a couple seconds it would have been much quicker had he had a 4th round in the gun.

That will never happen it is even federal law in the US.

The law requiring plugging (reducing the magazine capacity) of shotguns is a throwback from the market-hunting of early this century. When commercial hunting was outlawed, laws were passed to restrict overlimit or commercial harvest of migratory game birds, hence the reduction of shotshell capacity. Federal law still requires pump and autoloading shotguns be plugged to admit no more than two shells in the magazine and one in the chamber. Many people hunt waterfowl and pheasants on the same trip, and the plug law for game birds probably keeps some hunters from violating federal law when they hunt waterfowl. From a practical standpoint, for example there are very few pheasant hunting situations in which more than three shots can be reasonably fired while the birds are in range...even when multiple birds flush.

Well, the easy answer is dont take a shot at running deer if your not sure the 1st shot will do the job
and, what happened to his 2nd shot? Did he miss?
I've tried arguing that my rifle barrelled shotgun shooting sabots is I rifle I should be able to have 5 in the gun. They won't ever change it. Like southern ont I can hunt groundhogs with a 270 wby mag but not a 44-40 or 32-20 lever gun
I've thought of trying to fight the law, especially for rifled slug barrels. The migratory game birds convention should not apply here. then I got to thinking that if, by some chance, I did win the argument, they would probably re-classify rifled shotguns as rifles, and we wouldn't be able to use them in the shotgun-only seasons/areas. Another thing to think about - has anyone here ever had the chance to fire more than 3 shots at a deer (or any other critter)? I know I haven't. The only time I could EVER see a need for more than 3 shots would be in a home defense scenario, and in that case, the least of your worries would be the migratory game birds act.
I can't say I have ever fired more than 3 at a deer but my uncle shot 3 all at one a couple years ago. That would leave you out of shells with no room for error. not a common situation but it does happen.
You can have 8 in your shotgun if you want ...just dont hunt anything with the capability to hold more than 3. The game wardens have a wooden plug they shove in your gun to check.

Tell my Ex brother in law about never having to shoot more than 3 shots at a deer...TRUE STORY ..10 shots out of a Garand !!! He new he was in trouble when he heard the clip go ping!!! I called it a Husqvarna after that..lol
