What turkey loads do people prefer/use?

I only have 2 shells left of the winchester supreme high velocity turkey loads that I've been using for a couple years and our local TSC seems to be out of supply. They are 12 gauge, 3 inch, 1 3/4oz #5's. I quite like them, and figure lots of others do too as they were sold out. I probably won't need more than 2 shells (I usually won't pull the trigger if I can't guarantee a kill), but wondered what I should get for back-up shells?

What's the preference between 4,5 and 6's?

I've got my red dot all sighted in for these current shells, so when I change I'll have to verify the zero again.

Thanks everyone.

7/8oz #6 extra hard shot over 18grains of 700x in a 12ga rem sts hull 2 3/4". That's my skeet and patterns great. This year I'm using 2 1/4oz #4 from my 10ga sxs. She kicks tho

I patterned a bunch of 3" loads from my Magnum Wingmaster this year with a .660" Carlson's choke and the Remington Nitro Turkey (read, the cheapest ones I bought @10.95 locally) patterned the best. I was disappointed by the expensive Federals with the Flite Control Wad, while I have since been told you need a choke no tighter than .670" with them. I couldn't find that info anywhere on the box, website or paper catalog from Federal. Will have to retry the remainder I have with a more open choke.

As for what's in the gun this season, Remington Nitro Turkey 1 7/8 3" Mag #5's.

I'm partial to the winchester supreme elite #5-6's as well but to be honest I'm not sure it matters THAT much!!! When we're keeping our shooting distances honest (40 yards max) any of the available loads on the market through an appropriate choke tube are going to lay the bird down.

Hevi 13 cannot be beat ! you'll never look back..........

This is very interesting ammo, & only $20 for a box of 10 with a $5 mail in rebate @ Basspro. I think I'll just stick with my Winchester Supreme Turkey copper-plated lead pellets. Lebarons had them for $11.50 per box of 10. No rebates however.

Adrian, if you dont mind me asking. What loads are you shooting out of your 20ga for turkey? I just picked up a 20ga Wingmaster and I would like to use that this year. Its a hell of a lot lighter then my Beretta Extrema.

I used 2 3/4", Federal premium (flight control wad) #5's, in my 870 Express, modified choke.

Put the smack-down on a decent Tom at just over 20 yards...overkill at that distance.

I tried to return the rest of the box...I only used 1.

I have shot the BIG 3", 2oz+ shells before...but too much pain, for a little gain.

I use the Winchester supreme Double X Magnum Turkey loads in #4. Bigger pellets means more knock down power further out. They are 1 3/4 oz. so the recoil is very manageable. Took one on monday at 33 yards and dropped him in his tracks. I use a 1300 speed pump and a tru glo gobble stopper ported choke.

I get the double x loads from a gun shop for around $17. You can pick up the regular supreme turkey loads at wally mart for a little less and they are just as effective.

I like the way the Federal 3-1/2 No 5s shoot out of my choke (0.670) great pattern in my gun out to 35+ yards

for the people that say 3-1/2s are to painful I find this to be true only while patterning yes my shoulder was bruised, but when you hunt as we all know you only take one shot and for me at least the adrenaline rush numbs any pain.

got his jake this morning...

I tried to find shells at the local walmart here in Guelph and couldn't find any shells for anything. They had a couple bb guns but no real ammo. The TSC was sold out already. I'm using a 1300 speed pump with an undertaker turkey choke and a bushnell red dot scope. So somewhat similar setup's as had winchester supreme #5's. I only have 2 of those left, so hope I can use 1 of them to harvest a tom this weekend. Took a tom last year with this setup (minus the red dot as that's just new) at about 30 yards.
