Hungry review of M14Doctor M14 Op Rod Spring Guide (pics!)

Just received my M14Doc Spring Guide. Excellent piece - well machined, tight tolerances and even coating. Fits snug with no play and smoothed out the action versus stock. Will take it to the range and post a group comparision shortly.

Oh and Dave is a very fast shipper and a pleasure to deal with. Total time from oder to delivery to GTA was 3 days.

Just have to add my voice here, ordered one last week, thursday. Arrived this week weds. Very impressed with quailty and finish, fits perfectly, does seem to make the action somewhat smoother (but it could be in my head). Well worth $40, havnt had a chance to shoot with it yet so no review on that.

Well, here's the review you've all been waiting for. Took my new (to me) Springfield standard to the range today. After sighting it in I shot my final target and achieved 1.81 MOA (stellar for me, btw). I then swapped out the op rod spring guide for the M14doctor ungrooved and fired one more target. 1.28MOA. I'd say that was well worth the price.

My targets are posted on my blog at Voices Inside My Head

Thats sweet to see , i remember seeing the standoff with the spring on the NEA one you posted and got worried that something was wrong with my Raunch tactical one i just installed.. with a usgi spring of course .. but now all is well .

Is it normal to hear the spring compressing a little more with these versions than the stock one ?

I wondered about that too as my Rauch guide with wolfe spring makes more noise when cocking the action...Hungry told me not to worry about it ..So I dont :)

Thanks for posting that, Calvin.

If you would like to get your hands on a fluted model for testing, let me know ... I have a couple left.

i have found that the "noise" heard during spring compression on some rifles is the OPROD itself.
if your oprod is dragging on the spring, you can first try a different oprod if you have one.
or.... stone.... do not file, the spring guide rod's engagement tab on the underneath edge of the longer side..... a common problem with Rauch and Marstar guide rods. NEA never sent me any so I can't comment on thier version.

The true issue with binding or dragging of the oprod on the spring on some rifles, is the oprod, in that it is "tweaked", and it comes this way from the factory..... on some rifles, the oprod itself is not perfectly straight from cocking handle to end of the oprod tube. This can only be remedied by one of the above steps ..... or have a professional, with an oprod truing jig, straighten your oprod.

Well , ill hopefully have a beautiful HRA oprod here soon and i can definitely let you know ..

For the time being though when i did install the new spring and guide , i tapped the op rod guide (the band on the barrel) over a bit so that the op rod end where the piston is perfectly lines up .. hopefully this isnt the issue or ill kick myself in the nuts.. it took me a while to true it up .

In the meantime i wont damage the op rod guide rod by firing a few rounds this weekend will i , if i hear this sound ? id hate to have to buy another guide .. let alone track one down . it took forever to even get this one..

I decided to perform some more in depth tests on the spring guides after I did this review on Canada Ammo's Norinco 308 ammo.

Here are a couple of pics showing a dramatic change in group size after installing the fluted version of the M14Doctor spring guide.

This got me thinking a bit ... I always liked the fluted guide and less weight is generally better in my opinion (it all adds up), so if it gives close to the same or equal performance to the other two versions, then perhaps its worth making a production run of these.

So, I plan to make yet another run to the range and compare the performance of all three spring guides with pics for your viewing pleasure.
