What is your favorite military surplus rifle to take to the range for target practice and why?

a) Garand (mine is a IH Korean serial number)
b) Mosin Nagant
c) Arisika T 99
d) Lee Enfield no. 4 Mk 1 (mine is a Longbranch 1943)
e) K98 Mauser (mine is a 1939)

Feel free to add any variations or other rifles at all. The 5 above are from my basic WWII collection.

THe reason I ask is that I recently came back from the Kamloops gunshow and was looking at a 1903 & a P17 and thought to myslef are these better or just as good as any of the above? Both are .30-06 and very heavy.

I only have one milsurp, a K31, and it's a very fun gun to shoot. Main reason is it has a very authentic feel to it. Also, she shoots VERY straight.

I have a Winchester P14 that is a damned good shooter, better than the 2 Enfields that I own. I think the rifle I like taking best to the range is my Finn M91-she has a "hair" trigger and is extremely accurate. My SVT 40 is pretty cool (accurate and LOUD!!) too-me and my buddy let loose with both of ours at the range one time, people's reactions were amusing, to say the least!

Usually take in order of how many times: Garand, Springfield 03, Swede M96, Snider, SKS, Enfield, M1 Carbine.
I had a P17 before, didn't like it much. Heavy, clunky, awkward, not real accurate, all the things the 03 Springfield isn't.

You'll laugh, but the milsurp I bring most often is an 07-15 Berthier and I shoot surplus pulled 8x63 Swedish projectiles from it. I can shoot it cheaper per round than my SKS and with the long barrel it performs really well.

Second place in terms of volume shooting would be my laminate refurb 1952 Tula SKS. Again, don't laugh, I've placed in the top 3 in milsurp matches with it. I have several mint unissued SKS's, but this one seems to shoot like a laser beam.

I have many other much nicer and rarer milsurps, but these ones get most of the use these days.

I have a "Gennn-U-Whine" Winchester M1 Carbine (fall 1943) and it`s very accurate and reliable...I love the sense of history I get when I shoot it.....

I also have an H&R Garand that is also very accurate and the "PING" is so cool....:D

6167: How do you acquire such a beautiful finish on your rifles? Those are amazing? Have they been stripped and refinished?

Thanks

Thanks Guys;

My bud's kid me about bringing Redheads home! Sucker for reddish stocks.

The K98's were Czech postwar reissues and the Long Branch's are Reddish Maple or Walnut.

The Garand belongs to a buddy of mine and it is actually a Beretta with a replacement stock.

The metal on these are original otherwise.

I did recently get a Garand back from Vulcan after repark and WOW!
I must post some pics of that when I get it back together.....Cheers Paul

Winchester 1897: That is a beauty. I have an IH as well. Did you do anything to your stock to give it a cleaner and shinier finish? Mine is a bit darker and I have not done anything to the wood. I like to keep things as original as possible but a lot of these rifles are making me reconsider this approach?

Thanks.
