308 win 175 berger vld's at 2800 fps.
Watch the video and count how many seconds till you hear the hit.
The whaack is about 4 seconds after the shot Its not that loud cuz the 308 is starting to run out of steam at that range
My scope is set at 7.1 mils
The white spot in the video is a patch of snow , not the target

I'm guessing some wheres around 8, maybe 900 yds.

But I never heard anything that sounded like a hit to anything metallic.... could be wrong though. The plate we shoot @ that range is 1" thick, and makes a very distinct 'whaaack', right around 2 seconds after the trigger is squeezed.

it takes almost 3 seconds for my rig to hit 1160 yards so i am guessing 1300. And thats why i wanna move to alberta. Nice and flat. BC long range shooting is through the mountains, over a river, around a nook, scale a cliff, dodge a grizzly or two and get rained out when you find the spot followed by sleet then snow. Ain't complaining though. I miss ontario's flats. Oh well, BC it is til i decide to move.

Yeah, no kiddding R700. The only way to gauge the wind here is through mirage, wind sound and what you feel on your face. From overcast to sunny the bullet would move 4 feet. The actual range was 890 yards.

I was having a little trouble remembering the mils formula off the top of the head and doing the math in my head which I admit was mind blowing at the moment. I'm saying 775-800y. I'd like to see what someone up on mils come up to, just to see if I'm close because I've never tried reading them, only read the formula.

I take it the large sub-tension marks equal 1 mrad, 15 inch target (0.381 m) looks to be 1/2 mrad in picture, so 1 mrad would be about 0.762 m and 0.762 x 1000 is 762 meters,
or 833 yards. Which isn't too shabby of an estimate from just looking at some pictures. I do love the milli-radian system.:)

The bullet has to get to the target, then the sound has to make it back to the firing line. The time it takes for the sound to make it back to the shooter gets muddied up some when the range exceeds 500 yards. If you hear a bullet impact near you and make a one second 5 count to the sound of the muzzle blast, that will give you a rough idea of how close the rifle is, if the range is within 500 yards. Beyond that it is unreliable When I work the pits, it seems that about 4 seconds elapses from the time I hear the bullet crack overhead until I hear the distant sound of the muzzle blast when the range is about 850 in clear still air. Wind, cloud, & humidity can all conspire to confuse the senses making shot to the sound of impact time frame an unreliable indicator of range.

I mis read and did the math of an 18" target earlier.

It's a little hard to tell if the target is .4 or .5 mil in the photo.
I'm going with either 1000y or 800y

Yup, had the target been photo'd amongst the finer reticle graduations it would
have made for a better estimate. I am also curious as to the make and model
of scope though.:)

Sorry I couldn't get a better picture of the target in my scope . The scope is a schmidt & bender 5-25 with standard P4 reticle, and its awesome. The rifle is a custom 308 special match caliber barrel and rifle by Clay Spencer from the USA with a mcmillan m5 stock And Kelbly grizzly II action with 3 round mag, jewell trigger. 15 inches At .5 mills is 833 yards 6.4 mils on my scope and .4 mill is 1041 yards which is 9.8 mils on my scope. My hits were at 7.1 mils. Heres another video and the the bullet impact is sooner and quieter for the same range.

Yes, I think "Awesome" just begins to describe the scope and could also be used in regards to your shooting skills. That really is a fine setup you
have there. It's hard to tell from the pictures, but were you shooting at a down hill angle and if you were, did you compensate for that angle in your
shot calculations? And if I can ask, where did you pickup said "Awesome" scope?:D
