premium .311" or 312 bullets

So I am trying to come up with a list of hunting bullets for the 303. I cannot seem to find any premium bullets

You have to understand that all the so called "premium bullets" are made in the US and are esp. meant for the US market. The .311-.312" is a non starter in the USA as they have little history with the .303 Brit....the only .312" dia. bullets that may get popular are light weight ones meant for the 7.62X39 though not "Premium".

Ben I just got some 123 gr. Barnes X for my Ruger Compact in 7.62x39.
They are a Premium bullets I Think.:D DAN>>>:rockOn:
 
Years ago I bought a bunch of 200 gr speer grand slams, which may or may not be premium bullets, but they did not last long on the market. They shoot very well for me out of my p14 which was rechambered to 300 win mag, I call it my 303 win mag. I do agree that the limited selection of bullets sucks in this caliber.
 
I like the way Ben lists the bullets---- 'so called "premium" bullets'.
That's exactly my sentiments, also.
With the 303 British, it's good reputation on game was built on such bullets as the CIL Dominion brand KKSP, Kling Kore Soft Point. They had good expansion and stayed together. How "premium" can you get?
 
At .303 velocities what is wrong with a decent cup and core bullet? Cheap, easy to find and kills things dead. How many moose were shot with "non-premium" bullets and the .303 before anyone knew we were doing it all wrong?

Nothing wrong with it. I am just wanting to improve accuracy. There has to be something out there with match characteristics but with a soft point for hunting
 
Exactly. I was working with my old LE .303 a few years ago, and I couldn't find a bullet that would shoot better than 2MOA at 100 yards. I finally tried the MK and the TSX. Both shot MOA or better.

"...match characteristics but with..." No hunting bullet is made like that.

In that case, you simply need to try a bunch of different bullets and see what your rifle likes. Premium or not is no indicator of accuracy, the cheapest may be the one your rifle likes best.

None. I was told here in one thread that unless there was DOCUMENTED proof, then it didn't happen. It is just anecdotal. Nothing larger than a coyote (and that is marginal) can be killed by a .303Br. And since it is on the 'net, it MUST be right!!;)
Dang I hate kids who know it all and still have to use a gun they can't fire to kill an animal natives used spears on...
 
Anyone arguing quality bullets are useless, in the .303 or any other, needs to pull their head out of the muskeg- forgive my frankness. I've killed big things with quality bullets (ala Barnes TSX) and with bargain soft points (ala Federal blue box), both in a caliber that parallels the .303 velocity range wise, just bigger, .375 H&H. There is an unquestionable difference. Will a blue box soft point .303 kill a moose? Damn right it will, but a TSX is better. Saying you're silly to buy the TSX is, well, silly.

To the OP, yes Sierra offers the 174gr matchking- not a hunting bullet, but a quality bullet for accuracy which is what it sounds like you're after.
 
Ive shot many a animals with my hornady 150sp from my enfield. Never needed more than one well placed round.

History can be learned from I think, I agree how many animals have been shot with good old CIL or Dominion ammo. I personally dont think paying twice as much for a bullet makes it premium.

BUT if u insist, barnes makes a 150gr tsx. Not so much for nosler that I can find though. Sierra and Speer make fine bullets too. Ill stick with my Sierras and Hornadys.

Please explain to me how a bullet from a 303 British that groups 1 moa can be superior for hunting moose, or any other big game animal, to a bullet that groups 2 moa.

It is required for the 1000yd moose shot.;)

You HAVE to group sub MOA for that. Hell, you have to hold 20ft above the
moose with the .303Br, but, hey, since you can do it with a .22lr, you can do it with a .303Br.

Seriously, I gotta agree with this statement. At any reasonable range (out to 300yds), the .303Br grouping at 2 MOA will still hit in a 6-7" circle, well within the 10" vital zone on a moose. Place your 180 or 200gn pill there and you are taking home a moose.

Personally, I do not use my .303's over 200yds. Not that it won't do the job, but because I like to keep my shots in a 4" circle, that way a flyer will still land in the vital zone of a deer.
