17x223

I have not heard of anyone using one, but I do know a fellow using a 19 Calhoon, which is a 19 caliber in a 223 and he loves it. You can imagine his challenges finding 19 cal bullets!

It should be highly accurate and lots of fun. Very low recoil, VERY fast.

as to barre life, if you go by the overbore index formula, it will have an OBI of 1270, which means it's MOST ACCURATE barrel life will likely be 1500 or less. It will still be minute of gopher for longer than that.

Load data is on the Hodgdon data reloading center website:

FYI, I have two 17 cal Krieger barrels in stock that I got stiffed on and will let go below cost to get rid of.

Basically the same as 17 Remington

Hey guys. Just looking for info on the 17x223. Thanks in advance

1) how does it shoot ?
2) barrel life ?
3) accuracy ?
4) basic load data

Basically the same as 17 Remington, the British Army proposed it to NATO as 4.85x45 around 20 years ago. Copper fouling is a huge proble, barrel life is short and bullet choice is low. You can load data at :

17 Remington info at:

Instead, you should take a look at the excellent .204 Ruger and .20 Tactical. They does everything you want and barrel life is not a big issue. Bullet choice is great and getting better.

Do 20 Practical instead of 20 Tactical. It only requires changing the bushing size in your 223 dies.

I've been thinking of doing a 20 Practical build around Berger's 55 gr. Match Varmint bullet. It has a higher BC than 75-77gr. .224 bullets, and can be launched 500 fps. faster than those can in a 223.

And an excellent alternative to a .204 Ruger.

A 19 Calhoon is done on a Hornet case, the 19 Badger is done on 223 case. An Edmonton rifleman has come up with a newer design called a 20 Extreme, shortened then necked down 222 case that has proven itself to be very accurate with a wide variety of powders and close to 204 velocities with little or no brass stretch.
