What do you do with the bear carcass?

Wondering what those of you guys tat don't eat bear meat, do with the rest of the carcass and organs?

more bear bait??? bait for wolves and coyotes??? dog food??? leave it in the bush (fertilizer)????

that's a good question. personally i'm going to eat it this year but it's my first year so next year i may not depending on the quality of the meat. if it's bad next year i'll keep it for coyote bait

Are bears cannabilistic? Will the leftovers of the bear attract others? I ask because i am sharing the bait site.

yep they are.

you will find that a fresh carcass won't get much attention from anything but a big boar til it turns the corner a bit and starts to stink.

If the bait slows down for a while that's why...they'll come back.

Kinda like havin a cadaver at the burger joint...you get hungry and used to it bein there...

I'm not a big fan of spring bear meat compared to a fall kill so I've recycled the odd carcass.

I shot this griz off the bear carcass in the background. Literally, as it was laying on the first to keep the birds off. I wouldn't extend that to say that all bears will eat every carcass that they can get their grubby jaws into, but this one did.
What was interesting is that our guide is around the 100 bear mark and had never seen it before. The outfitter or exclusive guide use area holder predicted exactly what did happen and would have bet on it if he weren't the born again type.

I have shot about 10 bears and ate all of them with the help of family and friends of course. I never had a bad roast or steak. So I can't imagine why anyone would want to miss out on some "good eats" by leaving it in the bush. For me the rug or wall mount is just a bonus.

I know that a friend shot a bear and we left the gut pile in a small clearing just off the logging road. It was gone the next morning and the only choice was another black bear. Here in BC, you are obliged to take the meat from the bush on black bears. It is excellent eating. I have also eaten grizzly bear and it was just as good assuming either type of bear was taken in the spring or before they start eating fish. Had one package of sausages from a fish eating bear and they were vile.

cheers mooncoon

I have had carcasses weighing well over 200 lbs dragged 50 yards over wicked rough rocky terrain and all hat done over night. They get cleaned up very quickly

I put bear scraps in a an active bait barrel one time and the bait went cold overnight. I also field dressed one in an open field and came back a week later and found the gut pile sitting there untouched. The ravens wouldn't even go near it.

I eat it. Why shoot something you're not going to eat?

I've found the same thing in the past. If I'm planning on hunting that bait still tnat season I'll haul the bear out before gutting it. After I've removed the usable meat I'll leave the carcass in the bush but nowhere near where I'm hunting. BTW BBQ'ed bear backstrap is awesome!

Use the carcass for wolf bait. Drag it up and down a cutline, powerline, old logging road, behind your quad - any area where you have seen wolf sign. I used this method when I was outfitting for bears, and managed to succeed in getting more than a few wolves in front of my clients, once they were finished hunting bears. A lot of hunters would take some of the meat home, but not all of it. I have to admit it's not my favourite, so I don't eat it.
