Marlin 45-70 Optic Options

I am considering putting some sort of optics on my Marlin 45-70 SS Guide gun. The first thought that came to mind was a tang sight, but I don't know if it will get in the way (catch on things) as I pack it through the bush. I'm not sure how durable those are. So my next idea is a red dot sight similar to what I use on my .22. However the problem I see with that is I'm not sure if they make one that will withstand the recoil of it. Since I use it for bear protection, I don't really want to put a conventional scope on it. Does anyone have any suggestions on a brand of red-dot scope that can withstand repaeted 45-70 recoil? On my .22 I currently use a Vortex Strikefire and really like it. Would that work?

i find that the red dot is too big at 200 yards- ler scope, about 2.5 to 4 power is plenty
 
Well if your using it for bear protection, a red dot is probably the worst choice imo. As you need to turn it on/off as needed or if you leave it on then you run the risk of having dead batteries when toy really need em.

And if you really need it to protect yourself you probably won't have any time to get the sights up anyhow

yea, hook up a PRESSURE SWITCH somewhere so when you grab the rifle, the dot comes on automatically, like what the guys with the pistol flashlights do- that way you can have your red dot- or go with a radioactive one that doesn't use batteries- like the old single point

The batteries would be an issue for a bear defence gun, the absolute best sight for your application would be a reciever sight (peep sight) ghost ring prefered, or large aperature at very least. Buckhorns would be a second choice. I like the fast fire for low light conditions and the fact that it doesn't destroy the natural balance or ease of packing this thing like a scope does. All my other lever guns sport williams sights (foolproof)
 
I went with an EER Leupold 2.5x in QD rings with a Wild West ghost ring as my BUIS.

Marlin Guide Gun sights

For bear protection, you need sights that are lightening fast........try the Ghost Ring peep.......
 
I've had both the WWG ghost ring and the XS/DRC winged ghost ring. My preference is for the DRC system with a threaded ring to allow the use of williams inserts at the range and a more open ghost while in the bush.
 
Over on the Marlin Owners forum alot of folks like the Skinner Peep sights that they advertise on their forums, they look solid to me.
 
i have the skinner express sights on my guide gun with factory front sight and they work very well.fast target acquisition.going to order front sights from them soon,.you can order direct from them and shipping is quick and not held up in customs.just mount them where you would mount a scope.check out there website.the express sight are more money but look like part of the rifle and use both of sets of screw holes for mounting.
 
If a superfast, variable scope is wanted, a Trijicon accupoint TR24R (1-4x24) seems like the most obvious choice to me. Illuminated triangle no batteries required.
 
Geologist, where did you get the WW sights? They won't send them to Canada. Did you use Brownell? Midsouth UK has some of that stuff also.
