About a year ago I bought a Remington 870 marine magnum for bear protection while hiking in the northern Rockies and fly fishing northern streams. Luckily I have never had to use it in self defense but have shot about a hundred shots of 00 buckshot and a few dozen slugs. The last little while I figured if a purchase a 24" barrel with chagable choke tubes I would be able to use this shotgun for clay shooting and coyotes as well. However after asking at several gun shops around Edmonton including P&D, wholesale sports, phenox and wester gun parts I haven't found anyone who can sell me just a barrel. They all tell me it isn't profitable for them to sell just a barrel and can't even have one ordered. Hopefully someone on here knows where/how I can purchase just a barrel.

I have been told from some other sources that my best bet is to find someone with a used gun with a broken action or stock the take the barrel from. Also I have been told that a second barrel may not fit well on my 870 and it's not a good idea. Also have been told the cost of the barrel would be almost as much as a new shotgun and that I should just buy a second gun. Thoughts?

There should be no problem buying just a barrel. WSS does stock a variety of barrels for the 870, however most are blued or matte blue finish. I am not aware of anyone who stocks the nickel colored 870 barrels. Nickle barrels are probably available from Remington as a replacement part. I do not think that your choice of a 24 inch with tubes is that common. You should be able to get 26, 28, and 30 inch vent rib barrels.

I'd start shopping elsewhere then. Epp's generally always has plenty of new barrels in stock and their used selection is a wide variety as well.
(I'm guessing you would be OK with a blued or black matte finish)

"...can't even have one ordered..." That's nonsense. 870 barrels are common. However, as mentioned, the nickled barrels are not. Remington doesn't list 'em on their site either.
"...have been told the cost of the barrel would be..." Sort of. A Remington made barrel will be pricey, but there are lots of aftermarket barrels for 870's.
