Anyone had crappy luck with .22cal TSX

I have a 22-250 barrel that shoots very well . I shot a ".324 group the other week with Hornady 50gr. SX . Others shot OK but not as well as the SX.
I shot a group with Barnes 53gr TSX and well I'm not even sure if its a group ? I never found them ? They never hit a "24x"24 target backer ?

Interesting enough I had the same experience with my 22-250 Tikka that shot very well. The same box of TSX's and several invisible groups ?

I e-mailed Barnes and the tech. that e-mailed me back said to "seat them deep to increase the jump of the bullet" He said he had several customers that have success like that.

I e-mailed him back and mentioned that this advice completely flies in the face of most conventional accuracy theory I thought. I said I would try it and send him the results.

Guess what. I went to a bit larger target backer and never found a hole.

A crappy group out of the gun would be ".750 and ragged one hole groups are common.

So has anyone else had problems ?.........Or advice ?

These bullets are about good enough to me to foul barrels with at this point.

Thanks

Move closer, shoot at 25yds to see where you are impacting. You may be a foot or more high. Wierder things have been known to happen. Another possible solution is to shoot the berm if it is big enough... and watch with a spotter for the dust cloud. Pick an easy target or bring one such as a skeet clay target.

traces of gilding metal used in normal bullets left behind in the barrel can strip some of the copper away from barnes bullets , this can cause the barrel to copper foul and very poor groupings .

my stw with a dirty barrel ( dirty as in shooting something other than a copper bullet ) and x bullets shoots about moa , scrub the barrel clean and it will shoot ragged one hole groups until i fire some " normal " bullets through it .

as for seating the barnes bullets father away from the rifling , i've tried it , and it has never made much difference in group size ....

another thought , this shouldn't be possible , but is it possible the bullets a coming apart as the leave the barrel ?

what twist is your 22-250? The barnes 53 grainer is much longer than your average lead-core 55 grain bullet

Bingo! 53gr TSX have been known to be hit and miss (no pun intended) in standard 1:14 twist barrel. Try the 50 or 45gr.

He may be right. Worth a try at this point.

Lot's of guys on 24HR CF have good luck with these bullets.

.

I'm going to try them in my 1:12" 22/250 and 1:9" 223AI. I expect they should work.

The TSXs are quite a bit longer then conventional bullets of same weight, so a faster twist may be in order..

The barrel was fresh cleaned for the one test fire. I would have tried at a shorter range to capture where they were but only took a few to test. I will do this next time.
I just seems strange that once sited in this gun will always put any bullet somewhere on a 8x11 paper but the TSX won't hit 24x24 ? Holy cow ! One of the strangest things I've encountered over quite a few years of shooting. Keeps me interested though !
I may try a liter TSX or just stick with the Hornady SX

Thanks

Let me know how you make out I would like to hear your results.

Get closer to the paper...once you see the hole it will probably be a keyhole as in the bullet hitting paper sideways. its kind of neat actually...some bullets cant be digested by your barrel...you sell the rest and move on.

As for the Hornady SX...that is a good bang for your buck . I have some 55 gr. that shoot very well for me out of a 14 twist 22-250 .

Pathfinder is giving you good advice. I'll bet the bullets are keyholing, just as he says.

You could also put up a sheet of newspaper or freezer wrap behind your target. That would tell the tale.

I've had key holes before out of a 38/55 so I'm familiar with that one . I had SX bullets come apart in flight before from a 225 win. Looked neat just schrapnel on the paper. I have 300 SX on order but would still like to see what's going on with the TSX
Thanks
