Tell me what to buy!!.. Millett/Falcon (others?)

I've been reading a lot and still have no clue what would work best for me!

I'm a newer shooter, I'd like to get into longer range shooting.. 600-800-1000 yards (one day!)


I like the Falcon Menace 4-14x44

In my reading I've heard good things about the Millett TRS-1 4-16X50
I read other threads about this scope saying its pretty decent for the money. Any Canadian websites sell these scopes? (link?)

Are there pros/cons for a beginner and these two scops?

I also liked the idea of a fixed 10 power scope.. know any fixed 10x scopes I should look into? or is adjustable better for a first scope? people say fixed 10x scopes are enough to reach out to 1000 yards, but are adjustable scopes easier to learn on?

Any input on scopes would be great.. I'd really like to keep the scope below $500

by that i mean, seriously think about upping your budget a biot, even to the 1000 range, that will get you into som ebetter options, elite 42/6500, sightron, etcs..

i have the TRS1 it was bought as a budget scope just to get a rifle to the range, for the money its not bad, at 16x the glass is fuzzy hell, i find any thing about 12x the glass is fuzzy, other then that it seems to track well and be very close to repeatable.


what i recal from the falcon is that the retical is very thick... but i MIGHT be thinking of somthing else, since iv never owned one.. but the glass seemed to be on par with the millet
 
vortex are good glass for the money. But I would agree with the monkey in that you are so much better off spending more money for better glass off the start. Check out the sightron's which seem to be good value as well.

Having said that I do have a Millet in the mail coming this way, I will give it a go and if I dont like it Ill sell it here at a bit of a loss, but t least Ill know...

I have a meopta 3.5-12 x 56mm that I use on a 300 wm. Its a great scope with good enough for me clarity, but I find that the zoom is lacking for 500 yard shots. I can still ring the gong but its just small in the cross hairs.

Reason I bring this up is that if I would prefer a 24 X magnification or more for a rifle I was looking to do 600-1000 yard shots. Although often the cheaper scopes wont have the clarity at that magnification, but its nice to have.

I shot a .50 with a shmidt & bender at 500 yards once. That S&B at 500 yards was easily as sharp as my meopta at 200 yards. The expensive glass is amazing to see through.

i would take the 4200 over then 6500, the general consensis is that the added price for the 6500 doesnt seem to give you any better glass then the 4200, there has even been claims on here that the 4200 glass is better..

from what i recall, the 2011 line of sightrons have exposed tactical style turrets, but i would PM Jerry (mysticprecission) to clarify that.

but your deffinatly headeding in the right direction by accepting that you gotta pay to play.
 
I would give a serious look at Vortex scopes, very good quality and come with a no BS lifetime warrenty. There Viper PST line is solid and for a little less cash just there Viper line.
 
I have been using a FM 4-14X44 metric scope for competition. The metric adjustments give just about 1/3 moa clicks.
Repeatability of adjustments, parallax adjustment, range of adjustments, clarity are acceptable.
This is known distance shooting, therefore there is no need whatsoever for mildots. The front focal plane is therefore undesireable, and less than useless. If you turn up the power, the apparent size of the reticle increases, which is exactly the opposite of what would be useful. Last practice shot fired yesterday was at a small gong at 600m. At 14X, the crosshairs just about obscured the target. It would be preferable to see the reticle on the target, rather than have the target hidden under the reticle. Even for unknown distance long range shooting, mildots may be not particularly useful.
High power may be useful under some circumstances. If the mirage is bad, any benefit from higher magnification is questionable. In moving target matches, higher power may be a distinct disadvantage.
If I were replacing this scope I would definitely not get one with mildots or the FFP.

I have a Falcon in the fixed 10x and it is a fairly nice scope. 10x won't get you to 1000yds but at the same time you won't be getting there for a while either so in the mean time its a not bad option at a lower price.
 
It won't get you to 1000Y? There is a shortage of elevation? A 10X scope can certainly be used at 1000y. So can iron sights.

Well I have yet to get that far, 400 is my longest date with the Falcon, but I find magnification not strong enough. Maybe thats just me and my eyes? I for sure wouldn't be able to do it with iron sights!

In my reading, I've read that the 4.5-30x 6500 gets unclear after 20x, however I couldn't find any negative reviews on the 2.5-16x 6500 being unclear at 16x. over all I've heard good things about them. The sale price is kind of attracting me to the 6500 right now. lol.
 
I just got my millett 56mm LRS today. It looks like its going to be much better than I expected, especially for the dollar.
