How to get 1800fps in a .300 WSM?

Any suggestion for a reduced load to send some 175gr Barnes LRX at around 1800fps. The fastest powder I have on hand is H4198. Will I need pistol powder? Never played with reduced loads.
 
I'd try Trail Boss.

I've tried it in several cartridges from 22-250 to 9.3x62 and I've found it quite versatile for reduced loads.

You should be able to reach your target velocity and not burn much powder doing it.

I've never had an issue with it and I've been chronying everything I shoot. Although the shot-to-shot variablity in the velocity is higher than with normal rifle powders, I've never seen any evidence of what might be called "spikes". I have seen published data for cartridges like the 22-250 and .308 win, with Trail Boss using jacketed bullets, although I cannot find it right now.

Honestly I think IMR has gone away from saying 'Don't use Trail Boss with jacketed bullets!" to simply "designed specifically for low velocity lead bullet loads", which is not the same thing.

Your reccomendation of SR4759 is a fine one however, and worth looking into.
 
I'd try the Hodgdons 60% rule for H4895. I've used it with 150gr bullets in a 300WSM for 2000fps. Should be easy to get 1800fps with a 175gr bullet by going up or down a bit form 60% of the H4895 Max load for that weight of bullet.
 
Any idea if the same thing could be done with H4198? I'd hate to have to buy some H4895 just to load a few cartridge. Just want to test some bullets at simulated long range velocity.
 
Lymans 49th shows a load useing a 180gr .309 dia gas checked cast bullet.h4895 start 34gr 1818fts psi 19 900----max43.5 2234fts psi 30 200 .I have no idea how this would be effected by useing a jacketed bullet.

quite possibly; I may have outdated information. And I've only ever used trail boss with cast bullets (where it works exceptionally well) so I have no firsthand experience. I have used SR 4759 in several reduced loads with jacketed bullets, and find it works well

speer 13 lists 4198 with the 300 win mag and 180 grainers at 29-33 grains and 1700-ish to 1900-ish FPS
 
keep in mind this is the win mag, not the short mag. and it's for IMR4198, not H4198 (is there a difference now that hodgdon bought IMR out?)

29.0 grains of IMR4198 for 1760fps to 33.0 for 1998
 
Why would you use expensive jacketed bullets for 1800fps?
Why would you use a 300WSM for 1800fps?
A smaller cased cartridge will give you that with better accuracy/consistency.

See post #8.;) Barnes market the LRX bullet as a long range bullet and apparently they are engeneered to expand at lower velocity. I want to test them and compare them to the TTSX at long range velocity.
 
I like 4759 for reduced rifle loads, it was developed to do just what you're doing, simulate long range impacts. The plus to this is that it comes in half pound cans, so you don't tie up as much cash if you just need to make up a few rounds . . . but beware, low velocity loading can become addictive.
 
bcsteve the one thing you won't be fully simulating is how fast the bullet is spinning when it hits the target. This will make the bullet less stable when it enters your test medium. When examining the impact and the bullet, keep an eye out to see if your bullet destabilized (tumbled); if it does you might have to invalidate your test. The only ways I can think of to do this test would be to shoot it at full velocity and at full range (less practical unless you have a 600y or 1000y in your back yard), or to build a special barrel with a quicker twist rate (also probably just as impractical).
